It's Pride Month, and we are overjoyed to share a video series with you featuring our LGBTQIA+ professionals & allies in STEM. Thanks to all for taking part and a special thanks to Katia Jasbinschek Pinheiro for camera, direction, and editing! www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2Qf...
„It was a shock for us in the geosciences,” recalls a colleague, who models tsunamis at the GFZ. “Theoretically, we knew that such severe quakes could occur, but the extent of the rupture zone over more than 1,000 kilometres and the devastating floods in particular took us all by surprise.” 👇🏻
The image shows a colorful collage of satellite images of the Earth's surface, depicting various environmental and landscape structures in high-contrast colors. The images display river deltas, deserts, coastlines, agricultural areas, and mountain ranges from a bird’s-eye view. The color palette includes shades of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. In the top right corner is the “30 Years Stories” logo. The lower left corner contains the caption: “#23 EnMAP – Space-based Environmental Mapping.” The Helmholtz logo appears at the bottom right.
A satellite that comprehends the Earth! 🌍
With EnMAP, Helmholtz (@dlr-en.bsky.social, @gfz.bsky.social) makes environmental changes visible – accurately and globally.
From climate effects to soil quality and water: EnMAP delivers the crucial data we need.

A woman wearing a headscarf sits in a monitoring center in front of several computer screens. The monitors display charts, maps, and data analyses, including wave heights and coastal outlines. In the background, a large screen shows a tsunami simulation map with marked danger zones. The image highlights the GITEWS Tsunami Early Warning System. In the top right corner is the “30 Years Stories” logo. The bottom left displays the caption: “#21 Helping Brace for Disasters: The Tsunami Early Warning System GITEWS.” The Helmholtz logo appears at the bottom right.
The 2004 tsunami showed us the urgent need for an early warning system.
@gfz.bsky.social, in collaboration with @dlr-en.bsky.social, @geomarkiel.bsky.social, @awi.de and Hereon, created GITEWS – now known as InaTEWS.
And the research goes on.

Series of strong earthquakes shake Istanbul region. We recorded the strongest shock with a magnitude of 6.2 this morning, the strongest in 25 years. Read more here: www.gfz.de/en/press/new...
The 2025 Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” calls on all people to work towards a future where energy is sustainable and accessible for everyone. The geosciences provide important data, models, and knowledge that can guide responsible assessment, sustainable development, and management of energy resources. Sustainable and ethical energy development calls for applications of both established principles and innovative approaches that are enabled by geoscientists. The global geoscience community is committed to improving the knowledge, policy environment, and public awareness needed for us all to make conscientious energy-related decisions and take well-considered actions across all aspects of our lives.
This #EarthDay EGU joins our siblings and friends around the world to make a single statement, to continue to work towards a just and sustainable future, powered by transparent scientific research, conducted by our diverse scientific communities.

Very bad news from #Myanmar where a 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook the region near Mandalay. For a comparison: This is the about the same strength as the devastating quakes in Türkiye and Syria in 2023. We will update our pages for more information soon.
