Veteran Voices Matter: Meet David Wescott, Activist and Central Valley Native “I'm a Marine Corps veteran. 9/11 was my senior year. I decided that the Marine Corps was the branch I wanted to join. I was part of Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraqi War) and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan War). I feel like it gives me a little more clout than somebody else going up and saying, ‘Hey, conservatives don't own the military,’ and “Hey, there is a military veteran who is a progressive liberal that is up on the stage demanding our rights.’’ Think about that.

Grassroots Leadership in California’s Rural Areas Meet Rob. Robert. Roberto. Beto. Robi. Robert grew up in the small, unincorporated, rural community of London, California, where he experienced firsthand the challenges faced by underserved populations, particularly the lack of local leadership and resources. After spending years in the Bay Area and Los Angeles as a student and teacher, Robert returned to the Central Valley, motivated by the stark contrast in resources between affluent areas and his hometown.

The claim of pursuing a “balanced budget” sounds good… until you see the math. Trillions in tax cuts for the rich, increasing the deficit, while slashing healthcare and Social Security. Who benefits from this? We can do better! #TruthBrigade

Masked and unmarked ICE agents (real or fake) are causing fear and chaos in our communities. California legislators have introduced the No Secret Police Act, which would prohibit law enforcement officers from hiding their identities during public operations. Urge your local leaders to act. 👇

Here's to one of those I told you so moments. This entire episode deserves its own slot on “Veep”, or perhaps just a new chapter in The Art of the Flail. Here we are, deep into the Trump-Musk era, watching a Defense Department official sit before Congress and say, with all the smugness of a man who’s never read a civics textbook, that no, he won’t tell lawmakers how much taxpayer money they’ve already committed to retrofitting a used Qatari plane for Trump’s personal vanity fleet. Why? Because apparently the top-line price of this Gulfstream-sized ego trip is now a state secret.
Senator Jack Reed, bless him for trying, attempted to invoke this thing we used to have called “checks and balances,” but the response he got may as well have been a shrug in Morse code. The message was loud and clear: We do not answer to you. We answer to the guy who thought a second-hand jet from a petro-monarchy was the height of dealmaking.
And the best part? There’s every indication they got absolutely fleeced by Qatar. We’re talking about a regime whose entire GDP is fossil fuel and FIFA bribes, and somehow they managed to get the better end of a deal with Donald “I make the best deals” Trump. It’s like watching someone buy a used mattress from a Vegas pawn shop and call it a national security asset.
Now, mix in a mysterious $1 billion slush fund slipped into the “Big Beautiful Bill” (BBB, or as some are calling it, Bring Bribes Boldly) with no clear explanation, no earmark, and certainly no accountability. Republican senators, who, it must be said, have finally achieved the facial expression of a man realizing mid-bite that the chicken is, in fact, raw, are scratching their heads and muttering things like “duck fit” and “this is uncomfortable.” And yet… no action. Just more limp protestations and backroom handwringing.

One might reasonably suspect that someone is funneling the billion-dollar mystery fund into some Frankensteinian mashup of Qatari upholstery, MAGA gold leaf trim, and a monogrammed Diet Coke dispenser. Or maybe it’s to fund ICE stormtroopers on their mission to “disappear” immigrant families under the cover of night, something DHS, under Kristi Noem’s shadow command, is now paying for above their authorized budget with all the subtlety of a mob accountant skimming from a construction contract.
More than just corruption, it’s belligerent incompetence draped in authoritarian entitlement. A regime that no longer bothers with the theater of accountability because they no longer believe they’ll ever have to answer for anything. Not the spending, not the ethics, not even the laws.
And if any of this had happened under Biden? Fox would be calling it Obamagate 2: Airplane Boogaloo. Every House Republican would be calling emergency hearings from their tanning beds. But instead, we get silence from the Hill, from the networks, from the so-called constitutional conservatives who now act like the Constitution is just another menu item at Mar-a-Lago.
Even so, let’s toast this Qatari catastrophe for what it is: a flaming monument to hubris, a cautionary tale of unchecked executive power, and a stark reminder that somewhere, some very smug Qatari diplomat is probably still laughing in a silk-lined, climate-controlled conference room we probably paid for.

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.
