There is absolutely is a way to download your books from Amazon and remove the DRM yourself (as I have) and there are plenty of websites that sell e-books DRM-free. If you truly wish to e-read without the Amazon Ecosystem there are PLENTY of e-readers that are not kindle (Boox, Kobo).
