CBA urges Senate to slow down on Bill C-12
Immigration lawyers decry the lack of sober second thought and sidestepping components of the democratic process
The Canadian Bar Association is urging the Senate to press pause on Bill C-12, as its immigration provisions could put Canada at odds with its international law obligations and disproportionately affect vulnerable groups. nationalmagazine.ca/en-ca/articl...

Cuts to IRCC set to download asylum housing costs onto cities like Ottawa
The federal government plans to stop giving cities like Ottawa the money to house asylum seekers as funding cuts continue.
"The [federal] cuts will include slashes to program budget for the housing program, supports for economic migrants and health care cuts... And 4 municipalities (Toronto, Montreal, the Peel Region + Ottawa) will likely face increasing costs to house asylum seekers."

How much more evidence do we need? The ultra-rich and the governments supporting them will destroy everything for the sake of profit, power and pride. Nothing is precious to them - not human life, not the living world - except their own wealth and status. Our survival depends on resisting them.

Its always unnerving to see people talking about war like its sports game, supporting their respective teams, like its not something with extraordinary destruction that, under the BEST of circumstances, those who haven't been obliterated, will need to spend many decades attempting to rebuild from.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has also stated, "As the Carney government is planning to transfer health care costs to refugees and cut processing capacity, it is also proposing sweeping immigration changes that undermine the rights and protections of migrants and refugees.“

Humanitarian fallout from escalation in Middle East is increasingly daunting.
International law is best protector against vicious cycle of violence and war. Humanitarians will hold line, and continue to save as many lives as we can.

World BEYOND War stands in full solidarity with the European students striking today, March 5th 2026. #WorldBEYONDWar

Behold: the first-ever list of news outlets that have banned generative AI in their reporting. As of today, this is literally information that you cannot find on Google.
My goal is to fill the starter pack, so please send over suggestions with supporting evidence!

As President of Ireland, may I join with all those who have expressed such grave concern following today's strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel, and Iran's retaliatory strikes in the region.
The normalisation of war, including the invasion at will of sovereign states, is a path that only leads to destruction and loss of life.
As the Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres has said, today's escalation undermines international peace and security with severe potential consequences for civilians and regional stability.
All possible steps must be taken to avoid a further escalation in the region.
I call on all sides to immediately return to diplomacy and negotiation in line with the principles of international law and the UN Charter.
I welcome the support of Irish embassies and missions in the region who are working to support Irish citizens at a time when their safety and welfare will be of immediate concern to all those with friends and family living in the region.

Elizabeth May Gives a Press Conference Outlining Consistent Abuse of Parliamentary Democracy.
YouTube video by Green Party of Canada - Parti vert du Canada
Listen to Elizabeth May’s recent press conference. So much legislation rushed in Ottawa now without votes, proper review, or expert witnesses. As Canada responds to threats and pressures, we need to take enough time to protect the vulnerable and our democratic process.

This is a truly embarrassing performance by the minster who is responsible for devastating so much of what we value in Nova Scotia. It’s not long because he doesn’t have much to say.

Peace is a climate solution. Energy efficiency, renewables & walkability are peace building in that they weaken one excuse for war.

Don’t have much to add on the many intl and domestic law issues with the Iran strikes. But I’ve been esp struck by allies circling the wagons to support them. Carney et al want to build a middle powers coalition nominally more wed to the intl rule of law. Now would be a nice time to stand up for it.

We condemn Mark Carney's unequivocal support for illegal US-Israeli strikes on Iran, sabotaging negotiations in favour of regime change. A "pre-emptive" strike without an imminent threat is an act of aggression, a violation of the UN Charter, and a major threat to security.

It is worth looking at the full list of cuts here. If it has anything to do with environment, climate, arts, education, culture or active living it is cut deeply or eliminated. We need solidarity across the board to protest this devastation. #bikehfx most grants supporting cycling are eliminated.

Our governments are actively selling us out to companies that do not have our best interests in mind, based on promises of increased productivity and a flood of investment that are based far more on hype than reality. There are already signals that companies in other parts of the economy are pulling back from AI investment after not seeing the returns, and that even workers in tech who think they’re becoming more productive thanks to these tools are deluding themselves.
While chasing the hype, governments are leaving their citizens open to abuse and harms that few other industries would so easily get away with. As Altman and his colleagues make it clearer than ever that they care very little for most of the humans on our planet and in our societies, their word should stop being taken as gospel and the impacts of their companies should be assessed on what they’re doing in the here and now, not what they might do sometime in the far future.
Governments need to realize the AI productivity boost is not coming, and the investment they’re eager to win will dry up once the bubble bursts. They need to protect their citizens, not sell them out to tech companies that care so little for the social good.

Every day there are new announcements from the Canadian federal government gutting science programs. I was just notified that the National Boreal Caribou Knowledge Consortium (NBCKC) is dead.
Terrible shame to do this at time when boreal caribou are in real trouble.

very good explanation of why not to feed images into an image generator, especially when memorializing children after a devastating tragedy.
better not to use image generators at all.

I think this disconnect also leads some to convenient assumptions that he must be doing something we don’t know about. I met with my MP and her leg asst about climate and they used the word “stealth” related to emissions goals and said he can get to good results quietly and with less opposition. 🙄
