Photo of volcanic rocks at the shore along a beach
One of my favorite spots in Iceland (photo from 2024) - alas, I'm hearing that Reynisfjara Beach is no more? Never underestimate the spatial/temporal scales of erosion at the shore... ⚒️

I look forward to what you pull together on Glomar Explorer! I live not far from where the ship was built. I also wrote up a bit on how G.E. was considered a replacement for Glomar Challenger for scientific ocean drilling - journeysofdrg.org/2025/06/18/g...
hanging quilt with the word Love Data Week and Vote for Challenged Stitches
If you have an email address with a Big Ten institution, then please vote for Challenged Stitches: a quilt with banned book data. This advocacy quilt utilizes an analog data visualization for @lovedataweek.bsky.social from Penn State. #QuiltSky
Vote/read full description at btaa.org/technology/l...
Unhappy Little Trees is a quilt about cuts to public media funding. Last year, US House of Rep. voted to cut $1.1 billion to Corporation for Public Broadcasting [CPB has now ended operations]. Bob Ross paintings are now being auctioned off to help fund public programs. [blog post] #QuiltSky
Stitch Your Science 2026 - why is science important to you? Knit or crochet or quilt an original item along this theme. Photo and text due November 25. URL is http://bit.ly/stitchsci26
...and we are set and ready to go with Stitch Your Science 2026! Our theme this year... Why Science? Any age/skill level can participate with a "stitched" object. We'll have a live gathering again at #AGU26 and Zoom celebration in Dec. with an online gallery to celebrate.

Graphic with a ship, life ring, and microphone under water with the words Tales form the Deep, now on Instagram, and @sciod_tales
The audio narrative collection of scientific ocean drilling is now on Instagram! The full episodes of Tales from the Deep are still in the StoryCorps Archive, but now you can hear clips from the archives and new conversations over on Insta. Give it a follow! 🌊⚒️
www.instagram.com/sciod_tales/
The final 2025 posting for #TalesFromTheDeep is now live in the StoryCorps Archive - check out Kaitlin Schaible talking about the IODP framework, food, ping pong, mentoring, Mario Kart, and more from her time on Chikyu for EXP 405. 🌊⚒️
The attendance numbers at the AGU meeting are always lower when there is an Ocean Sciences Meeting the following year - not this much of a drop, certainly, but it's another contributing factor to the drop
Photo of female scientist, life ring with the words Tales from the Deep and a microphone in the middle, and a quote by Natalia Varela
The 60th episode has been posted to the StoryCorps #TalesFromTheDeep Archive! Take a listen to Natalia Varela discuss her JR application process during COVID, preparing for paleomag, and the impacts on early career scientists now that JOIDES Resolution is no longer sailing 🌊⚒️ linktr.ee/sciod_tales
Stitch Your Science 2025 meet-up at AGU25 in New Orleans Wednesday, December 17, 8:30AM (CT), Hall B-1, Pod 5
I haven't found any of the pod meetings listed in the #AGU25 app, so please share that any/all stitchers are invited to Pod 5 on Wednesday morning for a celebration of the fifth Stitch Your Science project. If you have any completed or WIPs, bring them along!
Quilt Alliance offered a challenge to tell your story through a #quilt. That's not as easy as you may think - at least for me, as I have several stories! So I decided to "weave" together my identities through a quilt titled "It Me." #QuiltSky

The latest on StoryCorps' #TalesFromTheDeep is a conversation with Rachael Gray, who sailed on JOIDES Resolution as both a lab tech and member of the science party! Listen to her discuss working alongside legends, having a growth mindset, and the value of just sitting around and telling stories. 🌊⚒️
Tonight in college football: Penn State Univ. plays Univ. of Nebraska. I have a quilt for this! Check out Versus, a data visualization quilt documenting the history of every time the 2 institutions have met, starting in 1920. Blog post: journeysofdrg.org/2025/01/13/d... 🏈 #SportsSky #QuiltSky
Now, there are 59 episodes posted in the collection, from scientists/technicians/office and support staff; early career to retired; from Glomar Challenger to Chikyu. Take a listen! If you have a scientific ocean drilling conversation to contribute, contact me.

Today marks the three-year anniversary since the very first episode was posted in the #StoryCorps Archive for #TalesFromTheDeep! The first conversation was between myself and Maya Pincus - she was in hotel quarantine in Cape Town, waiting to board JOIDES Resolution as an outreach officer. 🌊⚒️🧪
What is the "noise" you want to share through textile arts? Stitch Your Science 2025. Noise is all around us - news, media, data, etc. How do you sift through the context, distractions and misinformation to find the true signal or story? Join us - any age or skill level can submit an original piece of crochet, knit, quilt, embroidery, weaving, etc. with this year's theme for a virtual display. Submit photo/text by Nov. 15. https://bit.ly/stitchsci25
It is the 5th year of Stitch Your Science! This event brings together stitchers from across the globe, any age/skill level, who have created a piece. This year's theme - "Sifting Through the Noise". See how you can be a part of this virtual gallery! bit.ly/stitchsci25 #QuiltSky #CrochetSky #KnitSky
We also watched a bit of this video, and I asked students why would @flavorflav.bsky.social have a line in this song, "Human life been replaced by AI"? This discussion helped students make more connections between the impact of AI not just on what they are learning in oceanography but also in music
I also told students to me more like the cuttlefish - again, don't take the marshmallow because it is quick and easy and right in front of them
Last week was UN Global Media & Information Literacy Week, with this year's theme of "Minds Over AI". In addition to having students do an AI exercise with hurricane data, I showed them this video and told them AI is the marshmallow - do the work and there is a reward (don't jump at the marshmallow)
box that says "Can you talk about what a Halloween celebration was like on JOIDES Resolution?"
Halloween on JOIDES Resolution? Why, yes! Tracy Quan sailed on IODP EXP 369 during Halloween. Take a listen over on Instagram to how this spooky holiday was celebrated while out to sea. 🌊🎃

In the latest #TalesFromTheDeep episode, Virginia Tech's @clasticdetritus.bsky.social discusses his three JODIES Resolution expeditions, the opportunities to pursue new research questions, and Brian hopes "there's a renewed appetite for doing big important scientific things, like ocean drilling" ⚒️🌊
What an exciting opportunity- congratulations!

Giving a shout-out on @adalovelaceday.bsky.social to the women of scientific ocean drilling. Students/staff/faculty at all career stages have stories about their intro to & involvement with this community. Take a listen at the StoryCorps Archive. 🌊⚒️ #ALD25

The recent postings around the Seattle Mariners fans causing an "earthquake" reminds me of what we went through in Philly in 2022 - the claim that my campus seismometer (20 miles away from Citizens Bank Park) recorded a home run was, and still is, an excellent lesson in information literacy. ⚒️ ⚾
Thanks for sharing the news, @curinaction.bsky.social! I’ve benefited so much from the professional development opportunities, mentorship, and personal relationships in the Geoscience Division and from all in CUR. Forever grateful!
Square quilt with an octopus in the middle
A little late for #WorldOctopusDay, but this mini quilt is too cute not to share! The fabric was designed by Alaskan artist Evon Zerbetz for the Sea Life Collection (manufactured by Clothworks, sold in Alaskan fabric shops). I purchased the fabric on Kodiak Island before sailing with NOAA #QuiltSky
People and photos tell stories of expeditions at sea - but so do the ships themselves. This article from NPR shares the results of another look at the Endurance from Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. 🌊
This is an excellent @pbsnews.org story that shows how scientists, artists, and community members can come together to communicate about what is happening in the local environment

Today is #InternationalPodcastDay! Might I recommend diving in and taking a listen to the StoryCorps Archive for #TalesFromTheDeep - a collection of >55 conversations about scientific ocean drilling, beyond the science! 🌊⚒️🎙️

I'm so proud of Indiana and how she created a data visualization of ocean noise - through crochet! Keep an eye out for her at #AGU25 (*if she is confirmed for a poster, she'll bring her crocheted pieces with her to New Orleans!) 🧶
