It's #NationalHedgehogDayπŸ¦”

...and while many believe it to be about groundhogs really, we're celebrating #hedgehogs native to the UK (Erinaceus europaeus)!

It's still hibernation season for 'hogs, but there's lots we can do for our favourite spiny mammals...

"The Berkshire Tame Performing Hedgehog: A real Wallingfordian. The Hedgehog called Jimmy, my pal, has travelled over five thousand miles up and down the country and has entertained thousands of children and adults at various schools." The pamphlets goes on to say that Jimmy enjoys eating mice best of all, travels from 10 to 15 miles and hour comfortably, and is used to riding in trains, private cars, and even the London underground. He has a passion for string music, especially the zither harp. He is fond of playing with a ball, and barks at about 2AM every night. Jimmy is very tidy. He is also friendly, and comes out of his ball when touched.

It's National Hedgehog Day! πŸ¦” To celebrate, we found this lovely pamphlet advertising the Berkshire Tame Performing Hedgehog, named Jimmy. He could jump through small hoops and even had a set of bells to play at home. He was also particularly fond of string music! #hedgehog

Homicides at lowest level in nearly 50 years, ONS statistics show The 499 homicide cases in the year to September were the lowest in England and Wales since 1977.

Let's hope this positive news gets as much attention as the people who try to convince us that the UK is a murder ravaged hellscape.

The global climate stripes for 2025. Vertical stripes in varying shades of blue transitioning to light blue and then to red tones on the right side. The latest stripe is dark red, depicting the urgent need for climate action.

2025 adds another dark red stripe to the climate stripes

New data confirms Earth’s third-warmest year on record, and 11th warmest year in a row.

Created by Prof Ed Hawkins, the 2025 stripes reflect a century of climate science and provide a clear call for climate action.

UK to announce plans to emulate stringent Danish immigration system Shabana Mahmood’s proposals draw scorn from some Labour MPs, while others want government to go further

So let me get this right. We had to leave the EU to control immigration, and we are going to control immigration by emulating the stringent immigration system of Denmark, which is a proud and happy member of the EU.

Not sure day one of the latest ID card rollout went very well at all, not least because the government couldn’t answer the absolute core question about why they’re being introduced.

The case is that digital ID will be required for anyone to get work. The problem is ID is already mandatory. 🧡

One of the most urgent crises in the criminal justice system is that allegations of rape and serious sexual offending take five years to reach trial.

Any politician who claims to care about sexual violence and is silent on this issue has another agenda.

When I was 5 or 6 in the mid 70's my Grampy and I used to talk about the copse of trees on a distant ridge that we could see from my parents' house. It looked like a ship. I still think about that stand of trees, I wonder if it is still there, maybe I will try to find it one day.

Chart showing instances of wild animals using a hamster wheel left out in the wild, with visits dominated by wild mice, followed by slugs, rats, shrews and a few frogs and snails.

In 2014 Dutch scientists left a hamster wheel outside, to see if wild animals would use it like their domesticated counterparts.

The answer: hell yes! 734 visits from wild mice - plus rats, shrews, slugs ("running" being subjective here) & even frogs and snails.

The apparent reason: fun. Just fun.
