I’m used to historical signs on my long rides but NC goes above & beyond. Some r interesting Rev War but most about Civil War esp Confederacy. Maybe constant reminders of lost battle against United States explains some of our current politics?

Much as expected. Big prob is NC roads have no shoulders despite lots of space & wide lanes. Maybe DOT staff need V Zero class? Did get coal rolled; dble wide slowed f oncoming then gunned around blasting smoke & noise. Solution to reroute tail pipe thru cab?

A little worried about ride today. Getting away from coast so hopefully less traffic but NC is the NASCAR state & drivers seem to embrace it. Plus state passing distance law is “TWO FEET”. And road shoulders often meager inches. Yuck!
Spent night in tent in KOA campground too close to noisy highway so wore earplugs. And wore balaclava, neck gator, two thermal shirts, knee socks all while snug in sleeping bag. Sweet sleep. Now headed to heated toilet!

A shop employee here caught me off guard w question about safety wondering if I carried a gun (I must be in the South). Never had the ? b/f - explained carry small pepper spray but never had occasion to even. think need use it. Ppl r so nice (except when behind steering wheel).
I love visiting bike shops - staff always r very helpful & friendly even if super busy.
Why are bicyclists socialists? B/c we can socialize while riding & generally r polite to others. What is socializing among car drivers called? Road rage! When you r encased in metal w enormous power & stuck in traffic it engenders a dire social malady. Only explanation for unmuffling mania.

Thanks to @ECG advocating for safe bike routes & working w local & state gov on better infrastructure. Florida was passable, SC okay but NC along coast is traffic sewer w so many jacked loud trucks & lots bad drivers. Hoping gets better tomorrow as head inland. Diesel truck idled waiting f ferry :(
