According to the CDC, the preterm birth rate for Black women in the U.S. is 14.7%, higher than the national average of 10.4%.
Consequently, infants born to Black mothers with cervical insufficiency also have a significantly higher rate for neonatal care.

That plan led to a high-risk surgery: a transabdominal cerclage.

Cervical insufficiency causes the cervix to dilate too early, often without warning. It's hard to diagnose, especially in first-time pregnancies. And it's one of many conditions where Black women are too often dismissed or misdiagnosed.
