According to the CDC, the preterm birth rate for Black women in the U.S. is 14.7%, higher than the national average of 10.4%.

Consequently, infants born to Black mothers with cervical insufficiency also have a significantly higher rate for neonatal care.

Her story isn’t rare - and it shouldn’t be this hard.

Black women are still 3x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women in the U.S. The system must do better.

6/ The result? A healthy, full-term baby. 💛 FIVE YEARS after her first loss.

Rachell’s journey is proof that when patients are listened to and supported, the outcomes change. Her courage reminds us why equitable, culturally competent & #InclusiveCare isn’t optional - it’s urgent.

5/ With support from #IncludedHealth's care team - including health advocates, second opinions & reproductive specialists - coupled with Rachell's tenacity & own self advocacy, she finally had a care plan that respected her voice.

That plan led to a high-risk surgery: a transabdominal cerclage.

Cervical insufficiency causes the cervix to dilate too early, often without warning. It's hard to diagnose, especially in first-time pregnancies. And it's one of many conditions where Black women are too often dismissed or misdiagnosed.

3/ She was told it was "just bad luck." But Rachell knew something was wrong. She kept seeking answers - visiting ERs, switching doctors, enduring trauma - until she was finally diagnosed with cervical insufficiency, a condition impacting Black women disproportionately.

2/ After 15 weeks of joy, Rachell began bleeding.

Her OB-GYN said not to worry. But what followed was the first of nine heartbreaking pregnancy losses. Despite intense pain and fear, she was often dismissed. This is the reality of medical gaslighting.

Why Aren’t We Talking More About Cervical Insufficiency? | Essence Black women are diagnosed with cervical insufficiency more than any other demographic in the U.S. We should be having more conversations about this.
