I'd heard of using gravity to store energy in the form of water being pumped and then allowed to flow down, but I never thought of the old clock weight technique for storage of solar energy.

I can't believe I missed this. Is there any end to this Trump-era idiocy?

My big movie thought of the day: Hichcock's "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (second one, not the 1934 British one) would have been better if Joseph Cotten had the lead male role and not Jimmy Stewart.
Hard-hitting commentary about a 70-year old movie. Yep, that's me. π¬π½οΈ
This is well worth the watch -- all of it, both parts. It's the finest example of someone using their platform responsibly in the spirit of public discussion and education that I've seem in some time. Thank you @techconnectify.bsky.social for this video, your previous work, and all future vids.
I dunno why this would bother me, but it really really bothers me.

If Alberta decides to secede and come to the U.S., I would personally like to offer the state of New York and the entirety of New England in trade. I'm very willing to learn all the words to "Oh Canada", and I will pretend to the best of my ability to like hockey. π¨π¦

Okay, I'm genuinely sad to see the Model S go. Yes, Musk is terrible and I'd never want to own a Tesla, still the Model S was the first EV I ever drove and it got me hooked. Today I own an Ioniq 6 because of the S.

Bill Belichick not a first ballot HOFer is just more reason for me to despise the NFL media machine and the douchebags who vote.
I keep seeing Super Bowl 60 being billed as a "rematch" from 11 years ago.
I disagree.
The statute of limitations on "rematch" status is less than 5 years. Patriots vs Seahawks is just a regular matchup.
Republicans for the past 50 years have wanted to tie everyone's retirement to the stock market and gut Soc Sec. I wonder if it will ever occur to them that for such a silly system to work, at the very least, a smart prudent president is required. Not an unhinged, orange, demented douchebag.
Federal agents in Minneapolis wrestled Alex Pretti to the ground and secured the handgun he was carrying moments before shooting him multiple times, according to a Washington Post analysis of video footage.

No way could he carry those milks. The heaviest thing he's lifted in the past 45 years is his putter.
I remember when they first created the Department of Homeland Security, I very kiddingly quipped "Just another term for Gestapo". Huh, well what do you know?

I forgot how nice the West Village is on weekday mornings in January. Very quiet.
If you ever find yourself in the area where West 10th and Waverly collide, be sure to stop in at Three Lives & Company -- one of the finest small independent bookstores around.
Jesus feckin' Croist, I had never heard of Pearl Davis until today.
Now of course, I wish I never did.
Technology cannot fix managerial problems.
Not to go all "hey let's look at the positive!" but if I take Mr. Rogers' advice and look for the helpers in these bad times, it's pretty incredible to you see so many people out confronting the ICE Gestapo. If not for civic action, these atrocities would go unrecorded.
One thing I don't get is why ICE agents wear camouflage. For one thing, they're in urban areas. It's not like popping up from brush. Second, they look really stupid, like those militia groups that think they're special forces operators. I suppose that second part says it all.
As we go into this year's tax season, we have to wonder, why are we paying Federal taxes to support a regime that cares nothing about the law?
Christ, even Dubya who got us into two stupid useless wars didn't offend me as much as the current "order".
Alls I can say is that when a Dem finally gets back into the white house...and it will indeed happen...that person had better go shithouse on all the republicans who supported Trump. Now that we see what a president can get away with, we gotta let the pendulum swing the other way for a term or two.
Trump signs an executive order saying that states cannot set their own AI rules. Okay, fine. Doesn't really mean anything. He'll just waste more taxpayer money on silly lawsuits against states with AI laws. After one or two punches on the nose he'll move on to his next stupid initiative.
Thanks! It was my first time making homemade cornmeal. Still can't believe it worked out as well as it did.
Home baked cornbread using cornmeal I grew and ground myself.
Then it became this. And it was pretty damn tasty. π±
Home ground cornmeal using red corn.
Then I turned it into this...
Two dried cobs of red corn.
So I started with this, which I grew in my backyard (heirloom corn)...
Saw these guys at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NY back in 2001. (Yes I'm olde). This little video reminds me how good they are live.

As a longtime Patriots fan, it annoys me when players still refer to the owner as "Mr. Kraft", even after they're retired. First off, he married into money, so it's not like he's a biz genius. Second, he got and still probably gets rub and tugs at stripmall massage parlors.
Call him Bob.
Wow, for that kind of use she could get a super cheap EV and be fine. I live in a suburb in the northeast and I can charge at home. Otherwise, I would have gone hybrid, because it would be inconvenient to go charge all the time. Plus it'd be more expensive (those fast-chargers ain't always cheap).
Understood. I wasn't trying to sway you, believe me. I don't think EVs are good for every use case and yours is an outlier for sure. I was responding more to the mechanic thing which I think is a common misconception.
