I think it's sincere. The cartoonish stuff gets us to let our guard down, only for the film to surprise us with those punches.
I think it's his best work emotionally. That refugee camp scene. My god.
Yes, but then, in the middle of it all, he gets the idea for the Kool Aid man smashing through walls.
And yes, one of the reasons I picked up LD was because SK named it as his favorite.

Former Pixar employee u/PixelatedRonin fires back at chief creative officer Pete Docter on Reddit over claims on LGBT storyline cut from 'Elio' (2025):
In fact, the DARK TOWER's whole "what if LoTR but a spaghetti western" vibe kinda disappears after GUNSLINGER and gets replaced with a more literary, pastorale aesthetic. I wondet how much of this is due to LONESOME DOVE.

You might be right, though I always saw it as an homage to the eye scene in CHIEN ANDALOU. But my guess is both Spielberg and Lynch are just reiterating a class horror trope: the closeup of a severed body part that's still fresh enough to feed the critters.
Yep.
This is more an indictment of how the publish-or-perish game has normalized "fast food" scholarship and less rigorous peer-review -- which collectively blurred the lines between new ideas and old ideas dressed in new terms. AI can do the latter but not the former.
Seems like today might be the day stocks crash.
They'll crash but recover within a month or two, so it's a good time to buy.
