While Bluesky, Mastodon, Lemmy, etc are not perfect platforms, being a part of the status quo only serves to entrench the bad actors. We should be celebrating the responses of projects such as Debian who choose to respect their core values over "inconvenience".
Are we supposed to shrug when platforms like Twitter choose to eliminate protections against LGBTQ+ individuals because it is inconvenient to move to different platforms? If you remain active on a platform, you only continue to make it difficult for those forced to depend on it.
Secondly, we should consult the concept of "paradox of tolerance" as people tend to equate "banning platforms" as being intolerant. When we extend tolerance of those who are intolerant of others, those who tend to obtain power are quick to infringe upon the rights of those who tolerated them.
First, there is a reason why open source communities especially should be migrating as many people over to fediverse alternatives as possible. Nazism, fascism, and bigotry have no place in any FOSS project, let alone any self-respecting community that wants to promote or stand for human rights.
In the last couple of days, I have seen people on various open source communities compare the wave of banning Twitter on Discord & Reddit as "banning an entire nation", and this take infuriates me for many reasons that I am about to dive into.
