[cover painting by Iain Patterson: β€œTrio” - 2025, acrylic on linen]

1982 was quite a while ago, even the very end of it, which is when this gig took place apparently, with Lol Coxhill, Sylvia Hallett and me, Susanna Ferrar. The White Horse had a big room which we played in, on the ground floor, if I remember aright. It was on the way to Brixton from Kennington, and parking was no problem. There was no congestion charge zone then of course, and I just remember it being an easy place to get to and play. I don't know who organised the gigs there. Maybe it was us. We still had the LMC's end of the London Film Makers Co-op building in Gloucester Avenue, Camden, at that point. Sylvia and I had been keeping the office going. I think I had met Lol a year or two before then, and Sylvia would have known him longer. I met him at Rougham Tree Fair one summer, when I was fairly new to the world of free improvisation. There was a directory of members of the LMC and people could ring up other members and suggest getting together to play. That was how I met Derek Bailey, for example, and a bit later Evan Parker. I had been going to as many of Evan's gigs as I could, so when Luc Houtkamp said to me, in 1986, I think it was, "Who would you like to play with but you don't dare ask?" I replied, "Evan Parker". He dared me to ask him and so I did - but that is a story for another time. When I met Lol, it was completely out of every other context. I was at the Fair with my family: husband and son. I heard the sound of Lol's saxophone from quite far away, but relayed over the speaker system. I wandered along, gradually tracking the sound to its source and there was Lol, standing on the stage with his soprano... I asked if I could play too and he said I could, so I did! After that we had ideas of going busking, but never quite

Lol Coxhill (19 September 1932 – 10 July 2012)
"There are very few versatile artists that hold the importance Lol Coxhill has in European improvised music. His highly personal style on soprano and tenor saxophone (fluent, lyrical yet capable of shrieking outbursts), his ability to perform with everyone and in every style, from jazz standards to the weirdest electro-acoustic improv, backed by his enduring sense of humour, all draw the figure of a maverick musician." François Couture, All Music Guide

Born in Portsmouth and raised in Aylesbury, he bought his first saxophone in 1947.
He was a key figure in British free improvisation, working with, among many others, the Melody Four, the Dedication Orchestra, and his own ensemble, The Recedents [with Mike Cooper and Roger Turner].
He was renowned for his unaccompanied saxophone playing, often performing in unconventional settings.

A square, close-up, grainy, upside-down, black and white photograph of a game of sorts, a circular, aged, and distressed wooden board with a star-shape painted inside a circle, three differently shaped holes spaced unevenly through the middle of the board, each hole surrounded by tall pins with the numbers 1000, 2000, and 200 stenciled beneath each hole.
