In the March cover story for Psychiatric Times, I provide an overview of the proposed changes to the future DSM, accompanied by some personal commentary and suggestions of my own.

I just read this and, as I've already taken migraine meds+an edible, I missed the subheading to indicate where Awais stepped in with his own thoughts, so I sent it to a friend and was all, "I'm really loving the direction the DSM committee might be going in, it's almost psychodynamic again! π€¦π»π
This looks like some pretty major changes. Exciting to see a more flexible and scientifically valid approach to diagnosis.

5) The Definition of Disorder (and the Proposed Name Change)
6) Indicate the Degree of Empirical Validation for Specific Diagnoses
7) Explain Why Diagnostic Thresholds Are What They Are
8) Include HiTOP in the DSM Appendix
My suggestions revolve around the following points:
1) Diagnostic Formulation Needs to Be Linked to Treatment
2) The Missing Domain: Psychological Factors and Personality Traits
3) DSMβs Notion of Dimensionality Is Underdeveloped
4) Major Categories Should Not Become the New βUnspecifiedβ

Coercion is being oversold as a way of addressing serious mental illness, and its harms (forcing patients to accept useless or harmful meds & therapies, disempowerment, social disruption, etc) are being downplayed
