How did we get to fascism?
As we figure out how to get out of this mess, we need to look at how we got here.
Is this the unique result of US history or a reflection of authoritarian trends around the globe?
Andrea Pitzer, who studied concentration camps on six continents, says, "Why not both?"
On this day in 2014, Michael Brown, an unarmed Black teenager, was killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. A grand jury refused to indict the officer, who was never held accountable.
U.S. map showing that in 25 states and D.C., federal agencies like ICE and the U.S. Marshals only detain people using local jails. In other states, jails play a part in the detention network alongside federal or private facilities. In Arizona, Delaware, and Hawaii no local jails provide substantial detention space to these agencies.
Local jailsβmostly run by elected sheriffsβare making money off of ICE's rampant criminalization of immigration.
At 18 years old, with plans of starting college, #MichaelBrown died #OTD after he was shot by a Ferguson, Missouri, police officer. The teen was unarmed.
Today, we remember Michael.

I felt odd liking it so much as an adult (my 10-year-old niece asked me to watch it with her). Your review is affirming my initial reaction. π

On a personal note, this is the first paper I started during my doctoral journey on August 16, 2021, so while it's not the first, and I am manifesting that it certainly won't be the last, it will always hold a tender place in my heart. π
Most undocumented students enter higher education through community college. Using Shumaker and Brownellβs theory of social support, we aimed to understand how community college resources affect undocumented studentsβ persistence.

The article begins to capture the magnitude of how #TRIOWorks but it didnβt even mention that TRIO also serves middle schools students, high school students, and sometimes specifically STEM students in college. Not to mention hundreds of thousands of former students served from the 1960s to today.
βMore than 3,500 TRIO programs at 1,000 colleges and community-based organizations currently serve nearly 875,000 low-income students, 50,000 rural students, 7,000 students with disabilities and 6,000 veterans.β
βFederal law requires that all TRIO beneficiaries be first-generation college students and that two-thirds have a household income of no more than 150 percent of federal poverty levels.β
I can unequivocally say that MANY of the rural, poor and working-class students in my research credit TRIO to their success and continued enrollment in college. These cuts would be devastating to communities like where I come from. Write your congresspeople. www.insidehighered.com/news/student...
As a #TRIOWorks alum, I too condemn the attempt to eliminate a program that works magic to serve so many students so well on truly a tiny fraction of the federal budget. Please stand with TRIO and call your reps. ππ½
