Home battery not really worth it on its own, but massively amplifies the benefits of the other two
Means that in the summer I sell my excess solar to the grid in the evening peak at 31p per kWh. And in winter I power the heat pump with off-peak power at 14p per kWh!
Having done heat pump, solar and battery, Iβd agree carbon saving for the heat pump much greater, but not βfor your moneyβ. At best breaks even, whereas the solar will repay its cost twice over
Solar installers will come in give a free quote, including calculations of what your roof could supply
Definitely. Itβs obviously less efficient, but once you pay for scaffolding and wiring etc, extra panels are pretty cheap. So efficiency now matters less than total capacity.
Also east-west better than south in producing power to match morning and early evening demand peaks
You donβt even need a south facing roof anymore. The panels are so cheap it now pays to plaster them both sides of an east-west roof, for all day energy
If you own a roof, and the means, now would be a great time to install solar, with energy prices spiking
Solar wonβt get any cheaper - the panels cost so little now that the main cost is installation and scaffolding
Every day you delay, youβre effectively throwing away free money from the sky
Love the cyclist sailing through the middle of this mess. Very much βyou guys carry on, Iβve got places to be.β
you think you've seen the whole movie, and then the alt text reveals you haven't even finished act two
baby near staircase with no baby sign and white line in front of stairs.
City transportation official opts for white line and signage instead of gate to keep their baby off the stairs.
I am intrigued to see how they cope with the absence of jaywalking laws in UK. I guess theyβll need to be pushy like this
Thanks, thatβs interesting. Iβd have thought with all those sensors that doorings were something Waymo would have been able to design out. Disappointing
How do they react to you on the road? Close passing?
Waymo is coming to London. Any San Francisco cyclists who can tell us what to expect, and how to ride around them?
How do they respond to different riding styles (caution kerb-hugger, assertive primary rider)?
And what about legal-but-dangerous behaviour - do they stop in cycle lanes to pick up?
Spectacularly beautiful cycle to work again this morning.
Easy choice between this and squeezing onto the Central Line
Westminster's Bayswater Rd scheme would deliver a safer continuous cycling connection linking Cycleways 3 and 27, as well as providing a direct eastβwest route along the north side of Hyde Park.

Hi everyone - it seems thereβs been a targeted campaign against this plan for protected cycle lanes on Bayswater Road. If you look back through the consultation it had 400 negative responses in 24 hours π¨
Londoners on bikes, weβd love to hear from you in this. Please take a moment β¦ 1/2
If you live in London, please show some support to this consultation on new cycle lanes on Bayswater Road, Westminster
Consultation ends tomorrow!

Keep Hammersmith Bridge car-free βπ²
There have been rumblings of a move to allow cars back on Hammersmith Bridge, (a terrible idea) - so we need to remind folks just how much support there is to keep it car-free!
π Come down to the bridge on Saturday and show support: bit.ly/4b9o6DR
All four of those were on the same journey this morning. And once again I was very grateful for my electric heated gloves and socks.
Makes winter cycling so much more enjoyable
Thereβs no better way to travel to work in London than cycling through the parks.
Beautiful
This map is absolutely essential for anyone cycling in London! Many thanks to @safecycleldn.bsky.social for all the work that went into it.
Unlike other maps, this one tells you whether itβs a real cycle lane, or just a pretend lane made out of paint and parked cars.
Low winter sun across frosty grass in Hyde Park
Last weekβs central London cycle commute pretty special too. Iβd had a few days on the Tube due to mechanical issues and boy did I miss this
View through the dark winter trees in Hyde Park, dew shining on the grass and mist backlit by the sun
Another beautiful morning to be cycling in central London
Just as you thought food delivery companies couldn't inflict any more misery on society:
Instead of using lowly-paid gig economy contractors to deliver groceries, they're replacing humans with robots, who, in turn, force humans off the pavement into road traffic.
Londonβs cycling trips hit 1.5 million a day as ridership surges 43% since 2019

Thanks Wolf, thatβs looks very neat. And they ask what diameter of tube itβs to fix to which is good, as my ebike has a pretty chunky frame
Iβve been using a GoPro to shoot close passes, but this could be more effective!
Tennis racket carrier! Love that
Ha! When I said that I was literally remembering some old guys I saw at a cafe in Haarlem! Wonder if they were the same ones (although then saw lots similar elsewhere).
Thereβs real power in being a living example and showing the way to people who see you
