๐Ÿ“ข New paper out! Since Oct 2023, France has vaccinated ducks against HPAI. Outbreaks dropped sharply. We estimated 314โ€“756 outbreaks were expected, but saw 96โ€“99% fewer. Vaccination likely key, but other factors still to explore. doi.org/10.3201/eid3... @epidesa.bsky.social @inrae-france.bsky.social

This month, we're hosting Yik Lim Hew, PhD candidate from Hokkaido University ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต. His research dives into the epidemiology of #HPAI in Japan, and during his stay, heโ€™ll be investigating outbreaks: tracking introductions, regional spread, and species jumps using #phylodynamics.

- Duck farm density was as strong a predictor of outbreaks as movementsโ€”meaning it could serve as a proxy when movement data is unavailable
- Duck farm activity in nearby municipalities was also key in predicting outbreaks for a given municipality

๐Ÿค” What did we learn?
- Risk maps based on 2020-21 outbreaks align with those from 2016-17, confirming stable spatial trends of HPAI H5N8
- Duck movements played a key role in outbreaksโ€”not as direct causes but as indicators of farm activity

Usually, HPAI is first detected by increased mortality in sheds. Here, day of first infection calculated, with a useful app. Data useful for contact tracing poultry and farms.
