I am honestly, unironically shocked how such a person could have earned an officer's commission in a developed nation. They surely have some kind of law-in-conflict course as part of officers' training.

absolut. aber mit vergleichbaren funding-levels sind das herausforderungen die in den letzten 55 jahren gut lösbar gewesen wären. da gehts um keine fundamentalen probleme. (letzteres zB haben wir sehr gut aus der ISS gelernt, das ist dort ein relevanteres problem als beim flug zum/am mars)

Das liegt aber weniger an den "Versprechen" der frühen Raumfahrt als an der Budget-Allocation post Apollo.
