Seriously. What is not to love? It’s salty and fatty and tastes vaguely of pork. I was a changed man, but I also realized that if I gave into my id, I’d eat it every day. So. Tonight is the first night that I’ve had Spam since the pandemmy, and… well, it didn’t work in the popcorn. 🧵8/9

The first time I had Spam was during the pandemic. We had bought tins of shelf-stable food (literally stockpiled about a week before shutdown), and on impulse we bought some Spam. It was probably six months in when we finally opened it, and I was immediately smitten. 🧵7/9

(holes! running into waves! feeding tubes!), everything in the movie is anchored on Rose Byrne’s performance. And holy shit, what a performance it is. She embodies her character, and even the slightest of eye twitches communicates the deep emotion she’s feeling(⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2) 🧵6/9

and it provides the levity that’s necessary to balance out the themes. And these are heavy, heavy themes. Guilt, maternal instinct, mental health, parental responsibility, transference - it’s really tough stuff. Although the symbolism is a little bit too on the nose 🧵5/9

Our cat, who usually doesn’t care a whit about people food sniffed the bowl of popcorn several times! I think I am just not a Spam person. (⭐️⭐️1/2)

For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to cook Spam to death and then sprinkle it into popcorn. About halfway through I saw my mistake and dumped in some onion and garlic powder. It did not save the final product from tasting like warm cat food, dear readers. 🧵3/9

but Conan O’Brien, as convincing as he was, kept drawing me out of the movie. Every time he appeared on screen it was as if a clown was an understudy thrust into a main role. While the action may veer into Lifetime movie dramatic territory, it was still legitimately harrowing to watch.(⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) 🧵2/9

That’s really the only thing I would get mad about, but I didn’t.
