With the little I know about you (I think you teach English in some form?) my scifi pick for you would probably be Memory of Empire. Which isn't to say you *shouldn't* read 3B, I think pretty much everything is worth reading, but it's definitely *out there*
Like a lot of sci fi (written by men) the characters are quite flat. It has all the usual idiosyncrasies of something translated from a non romance language. It's very good in some ways and very bad in others lol. It haunts me, I think of it often ๐

Like there are tropes I completely reject on a conceptual level (soulmates) that can still be fun to read. I've even written things I don't typically enjoy (hanahaki) to see if I could fix what I didn't like about it. If I trust the author, I'll give anything a chance. One big tier of "it depends"
