Post-war he got involved with the squatters movement-better homes for all. He unionised working people, demanding employment rights. He is remembered by this plaque at 36 Castle St & by Bob Cooney Crt - housing association.
It’s important to tell his story as we face the rise of fascism worldwide.
He stood up to Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists, making them totally unwelcome in the city. He was the commissar of the British Brigade fighting Franco & the rise of fascism in Spain before fighting in WW2.

Bob Cooney was a ‘radical’ politician who held anti-fascist rallies on the Castlegate in Aberdeen. He spent 13 months living in Russia studying at the Lenin Institute & returning home began organising rallies & speaking at open air meetings across the country.
