I needed an escape to the Sierra Nevada and this is my hotel view. Those rocks are ancient magma chambers from 210 to 70 million years ago. They're been uplifted such that you can see them exposed today! Happy geologizing!

This little epidote (3 × 2.5 × 2 cm) is from a skarn! What the heck is a skarn? It's a geologic set of conditions that allow metamorphism to occur due to metasomatism. Now you MUST be wondering what this means. Basically, rocks react to groundwater and heat usually from nearby volcanics. #edusky
