Wizard Yoshi 🌟

In a field of poppies, a skeletal figure wearing a black and red silk cloak holds a smiling mask set on the end of a thin staff. Sweeping the cloak aside in a welcoming gesture, it reveals an antique key hanging from a ring about its emaciated forearm. The other arm is tied off with rubber tubing. Pronounced veins run the length of necrotic flesh. Beneath the cloak, chains wraps the torso, criss-crossing, secured by a padlock. The green tunic beneath is torn to expose yellowing rib bones. Atop its tilted skull rests a crown of mushrooms and a single bird wing. Its orbitals are dead black, and many teeth are missing. A syringe dangles from a loose chain around its neck. Another needle hangs from its belt with longer cord weighed down by a spoon. A long opium pipe with a bulbous end is tucked through the belt. A winding tree rises behind the angel of death, bare limbs branching like veins, blue against the purple haze of the misty backdrop.

All of the concepts I submitted for the 1982 Year’s Best Horror Stories cover were strong. If I had tried to guess which one would be chosen, the concept that became this painting would have been my last guess. 1/5

Dragon Ball

Light slants across the mist hanging over an Asian-style water garden. Lost in meditation, a monk sits with legs crossed, levitating a few feet off the ground. On either side of him, two banner hang from a pergola with wide overhanging eaves like a pagoda. Set on blue, an simple overlapping flower crest reflect Japanese iconography while on red an ornate dragon evokes Chinese style. On an arched bridge over peaceful green-blue waters, a band of warriors gather looking toward the solitary monk.

A bug-eyed horse-like alien with a short snout and long black hair screams at the viewer. They're being riden by a bald soldier, and there are more riders and steeds behind them, along with green fog and some weirdly garbled alien buildings.

A bare-chested barbarian with a helmet over his head rides a two-legged green dinosaur through a red, foggy wasteland dotted with odd tree-mushroom growths. The closest three growths have winged red demon on each of them.

The Time Traveller at the End of the World by Les Edwards (2020, oils on board)

An elegant man with shoulder length blonde hair and eyes glinting gold strides between a pair of trees barren of leaves but colored by alien lichen creeping up the trunk. He holds aloft a black sword drenched in purple flame. The edge rides a sinuous curve peaking high then retreating to upturned quillons and a curved grip tapering thin in the middle. The modest flames stand in contrast to shaded greens that tint the mountains behind him. His bearing is regal; his clothes made of fine black leather with gold trim and filigree. A purple sash runs beneath his long jacket, which sways trailing his motion. Behind him ephemeral spirits rise—the most prominent female with one arm and one knee raised. A volcano dominates the background, billowing smoke as it roils with electric green flame.

Windows 98 Plus: Underwater

A silhouette of a baby rendered in hazy blues is laid over the planet Jupiter with only a sliver of stormy surface showing against starry space. An obelisk filled with stars is positioned over both—transparent where it overlays the baby's eyes and nose. A long slender spaceship with spherical nose section dominates the foreground. Pointed away from the planet and positioned within reach of Starchild's clasped hands, the ship resembles a baby rattle.
