I’m not replying to the instance of this I saw directly because A) the person is going through it and I do not want to add to it, B) I do not think it was said with any ill intent, just ignorance of its connotations, and C) I am not inviting people to attack me in the name of defending them.

(I may be particularly sensitive to this because boy oh boy did I hear classmates talk about how Shylock’s forced conversion was a happy ending/too good an ending for him, and oh am I aware how language is shaped by prevailing beliefs resulting in language itself becoming othering.)

You can just say you’re owed retribution or justice or due repayment. You do not need to invoke, intentionally or otherwise, an antisemitic caricature steeped in antisemitic tropes from an antisemitic play, I promise.

It’s such small potatoes in the grand scheme of things but I do dearly wish people would stop referencing Shylock’s demand from The Merchant of Venice. Even as I recognize many people don’t know where it’s from or that it’s antisemitic, it sucks to see every time.
