Orville and Wilbur Wright successfully made the first four sustained flights of a heavier-than-air machine under the complete control of the pilot at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, on December 17th 122 years ago today. First flight, Orville prone at controls, Wilbur running alongside.

The Edmund Fitzgerald went down off Whitefish Bay, Lake Superior, 50 years ago this evening, November 10, 1975. The captain and a crew of 28 were lost.

Recovered ship’s bell at Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, Whitefish Point, Michigan.
