also this current spec has probably the least grade gaming i've seen in my career.

but the premises of that is something is broken, and for me, we should let maths faculties concentrate on improving teaching of mathematics rather than learning a new specification
I'm pro this. I think a protractor is a detractor
On double the curriculum time, next year ive got 7 hours a fortnight compared to an option that has got 5 hours a fortnight... are other places giving maths 10 hours a fortnight? Or 4 for an option and 8 for maths?
Hmmm not sure i agree. I think current gcse is pretty close to "least bad" option really. Certainly loads of the stuff flying round in the last couple of days doesn't seem better and most seems worse.
This is such a retrograde step. With all the gaming of the past, and the dearth of arts and languages at GCSE and A Level, why can people not see the net effect will be less maths overall, as fewer students do the double subject. It's not a linked-pair pilot!
For me, it depends what is viewed as the foundational concepts for circle theorems? I appreciate this pov if it is, they dont know what a circle is, or no concept of an angle, but I have a problem with, it is limited because they don't have a number concept nailed down
Yep. There seems to be a widespread misunderstanding about what Maths actually is.
see also; maths teachers teach finance. nah-uh. applied numeracy could be done by anyone.
another thing on this - "the qualification taken by all would cover maths and data skills"
fwiw whilst I see the value of dataskills teaching them as an abstract concept in maths doesnt have as much value (in my opinion) as making them an examinable skill in the other subjects in the curriculum
Ogre united sound like they are a handful at corners!
Point of circle theorems being on curriculum is not (only) because we want Ss to know circle theorems.
This all manifests from the mistaken perception that the point of maths is the topics to be studied.
Maths? Or the sciences?
We have maths and physics as a 6. I objected when biology wanted it moving there.
We have not quite got to compulsory core maths for biology but we will be there soon.
there's no way we are setting entry requirements that high in the midlands
blimey
I hope so! I like HF
Yeah on reflection maybe I should say "gcse higher", but i think foundation isnt too bad really.
You say terrible for post 16 without reasons - can you list them as otherwise I am assuming your reasons?
Grade 6 to study A level biology is ridiculous.
I dont think there is a problem with the gcse to be honest
Did she actually say "those with a gift for maths"?๐ญ๐คข
It's bad enough with two tiers, cant even begin to imagine 3 ๐ญ
solving a quadratic equation is fun
doing algebra in general is fun
working with surds and remembering "oh yeahhh, I can treat the number 5 as root5 x root5 and solve this" is fun
it is the same fun as logic puzzles and sudoku. if you like that, you would like this.
We did 75 mins a few years ago because movement time between lessons was killing us and it meant there was just less movement in the day.
However we switched back again after a couple of years of it
I think this may have been my mistake actually
be the change you want to see is just great ๐คฃ
Mathematician's version of "fake it till you make it", or "be the change you want to see", or "visualise your self[expression] in the role[form] you want"
Well, how about I #TryMathsLive on this problem?
Yeah, but also somewhat frustrating as I watch you a) go down the same seeming black hole i went down, b) try a similar trick to the one i tried, c) it then came off for you and I dont know why it didn't work for me
...but I dont have that notebook with me right now to check!
trying to do this question:
"Using proof by induction, prove that x^(2n) - y^(2n) is divisible by (x+y)"
hitting a bit of a wall
