Merry Christmas, Adelaide and Percy! Wishing you a restful winter break and a calmer 2026.
Our latest now published in @natcomms.nature.com, where we found a new role for mitochondrial programming of SC-Ξ² cell fate through PPARΞ±.
We're excited for the potential to target mitochondria to improve SC-islets to treat #T1D!

π§΅(1/12) November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and we have many works coming out from the CIRTN labs focusing on islet biology and diabetes. For the beginning of Nov 2025, we have papers from Drs Thompson, Verchere, Chen, Dhanvantari, Hill, Hoesli, Kin, Levings, Lynn, Riddell, Rutter and Wheeler.
CIRTN-R2FIC is currently running in Toronto its 4th Annual Meeting. During this meeting we have launched our mini interview series called "Islets in a Pod" ! Our first interview is with Dr. Patrick MacDonald from the University of Alberta.

a schematic of pancreatic beta and delta cells that explains how they turn glucose into activation and how these cell types signal to each other via gap junctions and G protein coupled receptors. The image has two stills of islet cells expressing fluorescent sensors for calcium and cAMP and of the same islet cells stained for the presence of the hormones insulin and somatostatin.
Very proud to see the main thesis work of the intrepid Dr. Mohammad Pourhosseinzadeh come out in @pnas.org today! In this paper, Mohammad assesses how crosstalk between insulin-secreting beta and somatostatin-secreting delta cells in the islet actually happens, in near real-time. A quick thread 1/10
Hello! Welcome to the CIRTN-R2FIC BlueSky account! Our group focuses on researching pancreatic islet biology and pathology related to islets such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Here you will find bi-weekly updates from the scientists from across Canada that make up CIRTN-R2FIC.
Our department at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada) is running two faculty searches. One is a joint hire with the Institute for Healthy Aging, one a cohire with the Math Dept cps.med.ubc.ca/careers-2/ Click on βFaculty Positionsβ on the page. Please help spread the word!

Bringing this thread back since this paper is currently featured as the Endocrinology Article of the Week! πThis paper was the result of years of hard work during my PhD and it wouldn't have been possible without the excellent mentorship from Francis and the collaborative efforts of all co-authors.
We are launching a new initiative to support experimental design, data management/analysis and bioinformatics. Early days yet, but check it out here.
