Yes but you also have to move sideways as you do it, or before/after the diagonal slash.
I dropped the dpad after I got to hunter's march with the diagonal pogo attack. It was so much easier just using diagonals on the stick.
Impressive especially since you only have 5 masks. I've died 5 times already and I have 6. Had to walk away for a bit, wandered into a new area, got bodied, lost 300+ beads. I love this game.
