A scatter plot visualizing the international reproduction of artworks by artists in illustrated periodicals between 1840 and 1959. The x-axis represents the year of the artist’s birth, ranging from 1390 to 1863, while the y-axis indicates the number of countries where their works were reproduced, ranging from 4 to 11. Each artist is represented by a labeled circle. Larger circles indicate higher international influence scores. Notable artists include Da Vinci and Dürer (top left, high reproduction in multiple countries) and Picasso (top right, high reproduction and recent birth year). Other artists like Rembrandt, Manet, and Cézanne are spread across the plot, showing varying levels of international reproduction and birth years. The plot title and labels are in French.
Map showcasing the countries covered by the corpus analyses
For #digitalArtHistory fellows looking at ways to study #art #circulation we just published "Greater Aura? The 19th and 20th Century Circulation of Art Reproductions in the Press through a Digital and Historical Perspective". We analyzed which images circulated internationally between the 1880-1960.

I didn't explored paintings yet, but "L'automobile al passo del Penice" seems a fantastic place to start. I noticed there is even a seminar about it. Thanks for the suggestions 👍

A Car in the form of shoes cut the feet pass through the street of a city and the feet of the pedestrians. Image published on July 16, 1905, in “Le Pêle-mêle”, a humoristic Parisian weekly periodical. Source: Bibliothèque nationale de France - Gallica: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k5517413n
evidence of negative sentiment towards the automobile,
such as protests and accidents, was mostly absent, with the exception of satirical publications. Only few images (less than 50 out of a corpus of 5000 extracted from in 185 journals published in 45 cities between 1891-1950) contains incidents

The iconography of the car in its early days is particularly interesting. If written sources tell us a lot about the protest against motorists, images tell us something different. By collecting and extracting images from the press, it is easy to notice the preponderance of positive representations
