Now that you mention it, I assume they think they have “cards to play,” but those cards are - as is often the case with conservatives - other people’s lives.
Kinky people who are overtly conservative are so naïve. I don’t know what they think they know or who they think think know but they really shouldn’t feel so protected.
But when something DOES break containment, it’s not *because it’s true* it’s because it got a million clicks and the outrage gets the clicks. So then it gets reported and Joe and/or Jane American see it on a news station waiting on an oil change and form an opinion that is deeply uninformed.
“Outsized” is of course relative for that era but now social media has been built into a massive system of mis/dis/information that people have to spend time sifting through but most people don’t have time and the only time they truly hear/or see is when a social media item “breaks containment”
Social media was not as sizable in its impact as it is today, and it certainly wasn’t flooded with bots to pull the gravity of attention away from facts the way it is today. I think it started soon after 2013 or so when tweets started having an outsized impact on financial markets.
