Have you tried interviewing them? Not about anything in your story, but just talking with them in your head. It did help me understand a character who was my opposite.
This made me smile. Is it a suggestion you can disable? Sometimes that's an option.

Me too. And the ones I do read, I'm looking for information on how the author is. Not what's their publication schedule, but if they or their family situation has improved. Lessons to learn, I guess.
A tentacled alien reaching for warmth and friendship to captors with cold hearts.
This is a scene from my short story recently published in Dreamforge Magazine. It's a story about a captured alien with a warm nature living in a society of cold hearted individuals. As much as I love this picture, my favorite image is the one at the end of the story. It sums everything up so well.
