I just stopped going. We went from a few trips a week to nothing, cold turkey, and have been fine without it.

It’s been shockingly easy and I don’t see going back without real changes

When the mind is a storm
the world is chaos
the pain cuts to the bone,
poetry is the answer.

Couldn’t agree more. Chasing the title over affecting people’s lives isn’t the kind of author I want to be, nor what I’d hope any of us strive for. And yet…

Oh I know. A friend connected me to his publisher and we had a good chat on it as well. I found a good path forward though.

One friend in particular was a project manager for an e-comm company. He also happened to play basketball professionally prior. A storyteller he was not. But he convinced our CEO to invest, had access to cheap ghostwriters, and his book became a bestseller.

A shit read, but still a bestseller.

I get it. My manuscript is sitting at 200,000 right now and editing through is taking a ton of effort. It's no small feat.

But it's also true that plenty of folks aren't doing this as a craft. Too many of my colleagues piece-meal ghostwriters and AI, flex industry connections, and hit shelves.

I take King's work the same way. I enjoy stories like "Dolan's Cadillac" but won't pretend it's the most suspenseful... I'll have to check out the novel you mentioned!

No sense in discussing with someone who just wants to prove a point. I feel you on the Meyer and King bits though. I love the hamburger metaphor in particular. The work isn’t trash, but it’s certainly contributing something different than Butler’s Kindred or Ishiguro’s Buried Giant.

I absolutely mean bestsellers, in particular by celebrities and executive types. There are too many ways to effectively cheat titles like β€œbestseller” and sell copies off that alone.

To each their own! FWIW my area’s groups seem to range wildly. From 20-somethings to 60 year-olds, and it really does add a lot.

I stick to generative groups and public reads. Heavy criques are nice, but can’t be an all the time thing for me. I agree. They can drown you out as an individual.

… certain things aren’t for me. My 9-5 as a corpo writer has to be good for something.

You’re certainly not alone in the dread! I find joining more local writing groups, participating in public readings, and other small, community focused events helps without completely draining my battery.

I also am not relying on my writing as my main income. So it’s easier to decide…

Ah, been there with the trusty stage shutting down. You can’t find the same magic everywhere.

I feel you on the reclusive part too. Just because a thing would be good for my writing doesn’t mean it’s for me.

So don’t think it’s you. Chances are you just haven’t reached your audience yet. It’ll come!

As a writer who works in marketing, I’ll tell you absolutely shit products can sell millions purely off great advertising.

A lot of self-published authors I know are doing well because they’re active in their community and doing readings, events, etc. It’s just trying to be found.

Also, didn’t the nomadic Jews ultimately settle down and establish a city of their own? So… immigration?

And how little use their experience is to the people. It seems so far the time teaches them how to wheel and deal, and that nothing happens without money. But not how to leverage those lessons for the good of their constituents.

Now we're playing USSR in Afghanistan, as if we don't know better.

China is wondering how it’s possible we went late 80s Soviet Russia while many of the US leaders from that time are still leading.

… reminding Americans of the war is more likely to rouse anger and criticism, whereas simply sprinkling in updates can satisfy curiosity without opening themselves up to critique.

08.03.2026 03:56 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

My take:

1. Americans aren’t interested in another Iraq or Afghanistan. Showing the footage would only call that to mind.

2. Much of the war thus far has been aerial and sometimes unmanned. Footage from either may well be more chilling than impressive.

3. War makes money, but sours attitudes…
