Churchill knew the relationship was never special
Eighty years ago, a prime minister faced a a fickle president β and a shifting global order
βIf a major burden shift is likely, Britain & its neighbours can try to negotiate a Fulton-in-reverse, receiving back the baton, creating a less American not a post-American Europe"

Magnificent lecture by @patporter76.bsky.social at the @mileendinstitute.bsky.social last night, on the 80th anniversary of Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech.
It would have warmed Churchill's heart to see a speaker holding an audience rapt without notes or slides - just sheer rhetorical power!

Churchill knew the relationship was never special
Eighty years ago, a prime minister faced a a fickle president β and a shifting global order
Eighty years ago, Winston Churchill at Fulton urged the US to take up the baton of primacy in Europe. He feared American abandonment, avoided the word "alliance", & warned of a baffling, anxious time. The moment was dangerously open. Me in The New Statesman:

Letβs be real about Ukraine | Patrick Porter | The Critic Magazine
What are we, on this side of the Atlantic, really willing to do for Ukraine? Now the question is more urgent.
Contrary to former PM Boris Johnson's euphemistic view, the UK should not deploy forces to Ukraine if it lacks resolve to fight a major war there, just assuming HM forces will deter Russian attacks. There were reasons Johnson didn't try this bluff as PM.

The fear of spheres | Patrick Porter | The Critic Magazine
Periods of international tumult, like the present, need careful analysis. Solutions are no good, obviously, if one wrongly defines the problem. And in turn, careful analysis demands precision with one...
Excellent article in the Critic by @patporter76.bsky.social. I made a similar argument at an RSIS conference in Singapore last week - the underlying logic seems to be "spheres for me, but not for thee". If so, suggests more continuity than change in US foreign policy. thecritic.co.uk/the-fear-of-...

To survive Trump, Starmer must think the unthinkable
Britain can no longer avoid the costs of appeasing Americaβs predatory president
Nordic Noir: allies cannot finesse or charm Donald Trum into accepting the status quo he despises, Europe's chief protector picking up the tab. To buy time, a negotiated burden shift is worth trying. @blagden_david and I in @NewStatesman
