The Hereditary Peers Bill has passed in the House of Lords in one of the biggest reforms to Parliament and UK democracy in a generation.
Can anyone explain to me what the Blue Labour justification for this is? Who out there will vote Labour because Mahmood prevented a Sudanese Chevening Scholar? And to be honest, why wonβt the PM simply overrule her?
I always think this - even if people insist on hand-waving climate change... surely having or building towards energy independence from volatile to downright aggressive countries is a good idea?
We are facing an energy crisis. Britain is the worst exposed in Europe with only 2 days gas supply stored. If only we had our own gas to exploit. Or our own oil. Or our own coal.... Blame @Ed Miliband (Allison Pearson on X)
If only we had clean, renewable energy and were not beholden to a dirty, expensive, dangerous commodity that pollutes our environment and is the source of most of our geopolitical woes.
This is good advice every day, assuming of course that your local city or suburb hasnβt been specifically and deliberately designed to make you essentially car dependentβ¦ #UrbanTruth
How about no? How about drive less? How about stop building towns and cities that force driving? How about we stop subsidising drivers to the tune of Β£4 to every Β£1 of tax they pay?

Two points:
1. Theyβre not βexpatsβ theyβre βmigrants.β
2. Them abandoning their pets will hopefully give each and every one of these people just a little bit of insight into the incredibly hard decisions refugees have to make when theyβre fleeing war zones.
The British governmentβs opponents have demanded that Downing Street respond to the energy shock by incentivizing oil and gas production in the North Sea and dropping climate policies.
Keir Starmerβs response? More windmills.
I never understood Osborneβs ban on wind farms. One of his worst decisions.
The pushback on renewables specifically feels so strange - even if you think the move to net zero is "too fast", the cost of renewables have come down massively, and as we're seeing re the situation in Iran, relying heavily on fossil fuels comes at a real cost

Thereβs an emergency meeting of G7 finance ministers later to discuss the economic impact of Trump and Netanyahuβs war, including oil prices.
South Korea has imposed a cap on petrol prices for the first time in 30 years.
The Chaos Agent in the White House has wrecked everything.
Labour will today set out how UK exporters and importers are expected to benefit from the new Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) agreement with the EU!
Announced last May and negotiated since, it aims to make trade between the EU and UK easier, cheaper and quicker.
It will cut paperwork....
Just when there were signs the UK economy was turning a corner, Trump does something else to absolutely fuck it. And then he has the gall to question whether we're a good ally.

The Mayor of London has issued a statement about the Iran war and the UK government's position.
In coordination with other countries that have the King as Head of State.
Never miss a chance to tell my favourite science joke:
Q: What did Crick & Watson discover?
A: Rosalind Franklinβs lab book.
If events of the last week have made anything clearer than it was already, the move away from oil and to energy independence with renewables is critical. China has shown the world how it can be done at pace.
People are selfish, donβt look beyond their own lives. My friends daughter had a baby 12 months ago, didnβt go back to work because nursery fees were 3/4 of her wage, the extra free hours mean she can go back to work. The 2nd wage will mean they can get a mortgage to buy a house. Itβs life changing
Long thread on LOTS of policies and announcements that Labour have made over the last year supporting Net Zero.
Labour also have an ambitious target to green the electricity grid by 2030.

Never forget that on June 20, 1979, Pres. Carter had 32 solar panels installed on the roof of the White House. He was a visionary.
Ronald Reaganβs first act as president was to remove them. He was indebted to the fossil fuel industry.
Imagine what USA could be today without the GOP.
Nicely said. Itβs why I go for regular long walks to look at birds. This past week I visited the beavers in Ealing. Pure joy and curiosity!
Price of Crude Oil WTI (USD/Bbl) over a five-year period, spanning from 2021 to early 2026. The chart shows a significant price peak in 2022 reaching over $120, followed by a general downward trend with various fluctuations, eventually hitting a low near $55 in late 2025 before a sharp vertical spike to the current price of 90.900. This recent surge represents an increase of +23.880 (+35.63%), highlighted in green text above the blue line graph.
The real insanity isnβt how much oil prices have spiked, itβs that weβre still burning oil for energy.
Itβs not in the manifesto so might not get through the Lords.
And Labour changed it back to a supplemental vote without a referendum.
The manifesto only says they will consult on change. I think they will start the consultation after the May elections and then put something in their next manifesto. Hopefully not too late.
The extraordinary thing is that the usual suspects will be objecting to Starmer were he to have joind in
They detest him whatever happens - he won't bend and flex to the usual string-pullers.
He's impenetrable, pragmatic and non-hysterical. EXACTLY what we need in the UK right now
