This is a very cool article/🧵 that outlines the argument and evidence in my book, Divided Armies, about why prejudice and discrimination is bad for military effectiveness
100% for decades now my rubrik for whether an (internet) critic is worth my time is:
1) Do they like the franchise/genre/media they're reviewing?
2) Do they make an effort to understand the thing beyond their own immediate emotional response?

Yup.
Being a good critic means LOVING the thing you critique, but more than that, it means understanding it.
This is often why novice critics fall into the traps of being either fiercely over-critical, or woefully over-forgiving.
They think the job is to be either a cheerleader, or a hanging judge.

It's like they see the US and countries they like as the Player Characters of the world, and everyone else as NPCs made to facilitate the PCs storylines. Then act indignant when the NPCs go off-script...
I am always amazed by how many analysts are incapable of grasping the fact that other countries have actual domestic politics

People rightly complain about bias etc. But for my personal news intake the worst is the gullibility of mainstream news. Complete absence of independent thought or critical thinking among mainstream journalists makes most daily reporting worse than useless.
Trump did not announce a U.S. policy then walk it back. That is not what happened, and media presenting it that way does a disservice.
Trump said words he thought might appeal to his audience in the moment, with no connection to actual policy, then did that again with a different question/asker.
If an official commits an impeachable offense and nobody acts to impeach, it is no longer an impeachable offense.
People who oppose impeachment as “pointless” because it seems unlikely to result in removal do not understand this very simple point and seem unwilling to even try to understand it.

I'm fascinated by the common failure of strategic mirroring where folks assume that because the USA built a global alliance of democracies after WW, that the autocracies must also function in a vast alliance with unified leadership.
Because they don't! They didn't in WWII either!
I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

In multiparty EU countries, the divide is more like 30/20/50 for fascist/conservative/progressives. Meaning you either get some conservatives in your coalition, or you're on the brink 50/50 every election... 2/3

"Genre emulation" sometimes misses a key reason people want to play in a particular type of fictional setting or scenario.
"What would *I* do in that situation?" is a fun question to answer in play, but is suppressed if a game encourages lavish imitation of what characters in that genre already do.
Imho, the best of Marxist tradition almost always resulted from ditching that pretense and embracing the messy reality of human culture as contingent and indeterminate.
Whereas the worst of involved stubbornly sticking to its scientific objectivity in genuine spite of reality.
