Messaging Playbook: Navigating DEI in Higher Education Third Way is a national think tank and advocacy organization that champions moderate policy and political ideas. Our work on the center left acts as a critical bulwark against political extremism.

How we talk about inclusion in higher education shapes who feels invited in. A recent Third Way memo examines equity messaging at a moment when public confidence feels fragile. I think about first-generation students asking if they belong. Language answers that question before policy does.

Burnout in public service rarely starts with individual weakness. It builds when systems demand sustained output without sustained support.

Mental health becomes more stable when organizations acknowledge the weight of the work and distribute it.

Healing burnout requires structural attention.

How emotionally intelligent leadership can drive organizational wellness A recent paper examines how emotional intelligence functions as a critical skill in education settings and as a leadership capability in modern organizations, particularly amid rising workplace strain, complexity, and change. The research is authored by Chanell Russell, a research fellow with the Center for Organizational Wellness, Engagement and Belonging (CO-WEB) at University of Phoenix College

This validates a belief I’ve long held: emotional intelligence in leadership shapes outcomes.

I've known many great leaders who understood the importance of composure & of earning their team's trust; leaders I try to emulate. Because wherever there's a leader with high EQ, a devoted team follows.

I think about leadership through the stories that shaped me: family history, travel, and small acts of service. Carrying those experiences into policy spaces keeps decisions grounded in real lives and reminds me who the work is meant to serve.

School IB psychology class: ‘Wellness’ culture is empty without service to others Human relationships

This piece made me rethink how institutions talk about wellness. The times I’ve felt most steady at work came from feeling useful, trusted, and connected to shared responsibility. When wellness is built into how systems function, resilience shows up quietly and holds under pressure.

People trust systems that reflect them, from community partnerships to representation & access. Trust isn't something you have to ask for when programs reflect the people they serve. People will happily to extend it to you on their own.

Six global lessons on how family, school, and community engagement can transform education | Brookings The Family, School, and Community Engagement initiative launches their Six Global Lessons report, a collaborative effort across 16 countries.

A new Brookings piece reinforces something I hold closely: education systems strengthen when families and communities are part of the design. When engagement is built early and treated with care, trust grows, schools stay responsive, and students experience continuity through change.

Quiet leadership often carries more weight than visibility. I think about the people who protect public programs behind the scenes and hold institutional memory. Their presence steadies systems through change and helps communities experience continuity, even when leadership shifts.

Systems fail when people stop feeling heard, but with patience & intentionality, healing systems are possible: slow decision cycles, stay in touch with community realities, & reconnect policy to the people it affects. That work rarely draws attention, but it creates lasting stability.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I’m reflecting on Dr. King’s global vision of dignity and shared responsibility. His call to widen the circle of belonging still asks something of us today. Justice is lived daily, not abstract. The work continues.

New Data Affirms Exchange Programs Benefit U.S. Communities - Global Ties U.S. The nationwide Global Ties Network turned every $1 in federal funding into $12 worth of impact for local U.S. communities.

New data from Global Ties US shows how exchange programs benefit communities across the country. Pay attention to who is visible in these systems. When leadership reflects the country we live in, policy feels more credible and outcomes last longer. Representation shapes how impact takes hold.

Diplomacy doesn’t only live in statements or summits. Some of the strongest global relationships grow through cultural exchange and community ties built over time. When people work alongside one another across borders, trust deepens and cooperation becomes something people sustain, not wait for.

The Resilience Dividend: How Adaptability Builds Long Term Value Resilience is emerging as the next competitive edge, as businesses and investors shift from efficiency to adaptability to protect value in an era of systemic risk.

Resilience shows up in the relationships that keep systems together during change. It’s the cultural wisdom carried across generations & the leadership pipelines that prepare people for new roles.

If you build a culture of belonging, your team can adjust without losing their purpose.

This year sharpened how I think about trust in institutions. I noticed where confidence held & where it thinned. I saw trust strengthen through consistency & openness, & weaken when systems felt distant. The daily choices leaders make determine what trust can carry forward.

Equitable pathways can only be built by listening closely & treating identity as an asset rather than a hurdle. We must design programs where students from every background feel like they belong in the room.

When leadership reflects the country, systems (& the next generation) thrives.

Meaningful leadership comes from people who move quietly and shape community through care and consistency. Their influence builds trust, strengthens connections, and creates the conditions for others to thrive.

10,000 Interns CEO: ‘Inequality is not inevitable’ Rebecca Achieng Ajulu-Bushell addressed attendees at a dinner to recognise the women on PEN’s Trailblazing Women list

The 10,000 Interns Foundation shows how opportunity grows when it’s designed with intention. Paid pathways for under-represented graduates reshape who gets to lead. I’ve seen in public service that when access expands, trust expands with it. Inequality was built over time (and so is equity).

Giving Tuesday reminds me how access can change a life. Programs that expand inclusion, global understanding, and opportunity matter more than ever. If you can, support a cause that opens doors for someone who’s been kept out. Every act of generosity counts.
