Worth Reading: The World Is Now a Casino
Podcast Episode · Remap Radio · March 11 · 39m
It was a delight to chat with journalist Jack Ryan (@jacksonwryan.com) for Worth Reading this week, about his excellent (but distressing) piece in @aftermath.site about the way casinos, crypto, and AI are junking up your favorite web sites podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/w...

One last plug for my @remapradio.bsky.social piece on the consolidation - and decay - of football video games, and the parallels with the sport itself. Thanks to @mossrc.bsky.social for his expert insight on the FIFA/PES rivalry (and much more!)

Haven't mentioned yet that I wrote the cover feature for the current issue of Edge. Pick up a copy while it's still on sale!
Did you know that No Law is a proper immersive sim, in the style of Deus Ex and Dishonored? I flew to Sweden in January so that you could read all about it.

There's something magical about video games set in the real world. At the intersection of the fantastical and the munda…
It's March 11. When Momo died March 11, 2011, I said, fully serious "I'm not expecting to see my next birthday." That was 15 years ago. 15 years of still regularly fighting off that thought pattern, but I'm stil around. www.eurogamer.net/after-i-step...

For the later crowd - I wrote about the mechanical and moral decay of the FIFA/EA FC series, the consolidation of the footy sim genre, and how it all mirrors trends in wider sport.
So glad I got the chance to write this. Thx @robzacny.bsky.social for the commission. Subscribe and read if you can!

It's rare a publication gives you so much space and flexibility to properly get into a topic - made for one of the more personal stories I've written in a while.
If you haven't already, subscribe to @remapradio.bsky.social! You won't regret it

Enclosing the Virtual Pitch
The consolidation of soccer video games, and the capture of a pastime.
Here’s @samuelhorti.bsky.social on how the consolidation of soccer video games has mirrored the capture of the sport itself by some of the worst actors on the world stage. remapradio.com/other/enclos...

Marathon’s Absurd Pickpocketing Drone Shows How Bungie Is Doing Extraction Shooters Differently - IGN
Marathon's brilliantly bizarre Thief class shows how Bungie is putting a mischievous new spin on extraction shooters.
For @ign.com I wrote about my favourite part of Marathon: the classes! Clearly inspired by Apex Legends but Bungie has conjured some truly original abilities including a pickpocketing lasso drone.

V excited about a piece I've got coming out this week for @remapradio.bsky.social - one of the more personal pieces I've written recently. It's on the grim state of football sims and how it mirrors real-life sports.
Will share when live - huge thanks to @robzacny.bsky.social for commissioning it!

7 years after I started VGC, I’m incredibly proud of the editorial team. In particular, in the last 18 months, we visited the likes of Team Asobi, Capcom, Kojima Productions, and TPC, while interviewing Todd Howard, Hideki Kamiya, Sega, Square Enix, Konami, Sucker Punch, CD Projekt, and many more.

Ah I've wanted to play this since reading your piece on it - sounds (and looks) incredible. Do you think it'd work with controller/on Steam Deck? It's marked as playable. Need a new go-to city builder, burned out on CS2 a while back

I could have written 10k words on this game. It's remarkable. It's everything you want and need from a city-builder, but also there's transport tycoon and sid meier's colonization stuff in there as well, and even in EA it's almost perfect

Bethesda's former Elder Scrolls loremaster on why he left, Starfield's 'communication breakdowns', and how he wanted The Elder Scrolls 6 'to be The Empire Strikes Back'
"It was almost certainly time for a change."
Really enjoyed chatting to Kurt Kuhlmann, former Bethesda dev and Elder Scrolls "loremaster", about his decision to leave the studio and a promise Todd Howard made him about TES6 - a promise, he says, that was never fulfilled

Thanks to @mattleone.bsky.social for having me, all the interview subjects for talking to me, and @kim-hu.com for the incredible accompanying illustration.

Hearing Rematch in some GOTY lists (including
on @backpagepod.bsky.social) reminded me I forgot to post this. After a decade of trying I finally got good at an online game - and it wasn't everything I hoped it would be.
Wonderful illustration by Katherine (below!)

Microsoft's year of shame
Can't make a few trillion dollars without ditching game developers, going googoo gaga for AI and supplying tech to the military, I suppose!
So very tired, but I couldn't let 2025 end without taking stock of Microsoft's embarrassing treatment of gaming, Windows, and indeed human beings while it chases the AI money train
