Harvest There's a lot been said about the gold of the fresh stubble on the almost-hills of Suffolk, lit rich from the west on the first evening of September; rising (if you can call it that) to meet the indigo clouds coming in from the east. Loads said about– darker yet on dark– the crows arriving in unruly squadrons: landing, gorging, scattering before the tractor which rushes, rust red, ahead of the storm. (And here it is: the splatter of cold rain in the warm wind. Summer ending; harvest coming in.) Plenty been said on all that, I'm sure. But, Christ, doesn't it just bear saying once more.
