In the foreground, scattered conifers rise from rolling hills. Their dark forms stand sharply against the lighter slopes, the trees irregularly spaced across the ridgelines. Snow lies in long streaks along the contours of the hills, settling into shallow draws and shaded folds while leaving exposed patches of grass and soil on the windward slopes. Beyond the nearer ridges, the terrain steps gradually upward through a series of darker bands. Each successive layer of hills becomes softer and more muted, the details fading as they recede into the distance.
