On Jury Trials Have you ever heard of a grand jury? If you live in the UK, chances are you've only ever heard them mentioned in American TV shows, but they were once a major part of our shared legal system. It is now 93 years since the last grand jury was called in the United Kingdom and its powers were transferred to magistrates.

In my first year as an MP I tried to expand take up of free school meals to save low income households Β£500 per child. Today's vote is making it a reality for half a million more children.

War in Iran, Crawley Observer Column, Wednesday 4th MarchΒ 2025 I know it will concern many that we are once more set for war in the Middle East, not least those with friends and family in the region, and over recent days I have been contacted by UK citizens stranded in countries which have come under bombardment. Few will shed tears for a regime prepared to murder so many of their own people and in the last month I had already spoken with the Minister for the Middle East to discuss what the UK could do to support those protesting for freedom, and ask that the Home Office review proscription of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Peter Lamb MP Demands Reinstatement of 24-Hour Urgent Treatment Centre at CrawleyΒ Hospital Local MP Peter Lamb has today called on NHS Sussex to urgently reinstate 24-hour urgent treatment services at Crawley Hospital, following the decision to reduce the operating hours of the hospital’s Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC). The reduction in hours has raised serious concerns among local residents about access to urgent healthcare, particularly during evenings and overnight, when alternative services are limited and travel to other hospitals can be difficult.

Supporting children with SEND, Crawley Observer Column, Wednesday 25th FebruaryΒ 2025 People contact their MPs for many reasons, but if there is one thing which has been raised at my regular surgeries more than any other it is the need for more support for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Crawley is blessed with fantastic schools and dedicated teachers who want to do the best for every child. Yet, for years the numbers of pupils with SEND has been rising far above what the current system was designed to support.

With the 'temporary' overnight closure of Crawley's Urgent Treatment Centre about to be made permanent, I took the opportunity to raise the matter in the House another time and to secure a meeting with the Minister of State to discuss how local services might be preserved and improved.

Keeping children safe from social media, Crawley Observer Column, Wednesday 18th FebruaryΒ 2025 I recall hearing about a group of advertising executives who, many years ago, went to visit a cigarette company client. During their meeting they were given large multipacks of cigarettes, but to the advertisers’ surprise the cigarette company executives didn’t smoke with them, in fact it turned out none of them smoked. What they knew, and kept from the public, was the risk cigarettes pose to life.

Government set to deliver historic investment in communityΒ energy Communities like Crawley are set to benefit from the opportunity to own and control their own energy projects thanks to a new Labour initiative. The Government’s Local Power Plan delivers the biggest investment in community energy in UK history, giving communities control over local energy generation and the ability to use its profits to reinvest locally. Over recent years, new economic development in Crawley has been hampered by capacity limitations with the town’s current grid connectivity.

Major apprenticeships reform launched as UK marks National ApprenticeshipsΒ Week Peter Lamb MP, has welcomed the news that young people will be given a quicker route into high-quality jobs on major projects as the government slashes red tape to fast-track the process, and pledges to work with local partners and business to make sure young people living in Crawley can benefit. The latest reforms come as the government ramps up support for young people to take up apprenticeships, including a recent Β£725 million investment to pivot the system towards the workforce of the future.

Great to attend the opening of St Catherine’s new shop tonight.

The hospice does amazing work, but demand and costs keep going up.

There's new money from the Government but fundraising remains essential with the shop playing a vital role while helping fill a vacant unit.

Tackling the cost of living, Crawley Observer Column, Wednesday 11th FebruaryΒ 2025 Last week, I set out how the Government was working to deliver economic growth. This week, as promised, I intend to cover how Labour is working to cut the cost of living. Since the Liz Truss Budget the UK has struggled with high inflation and correspondingly high interest rates, dramatically hitting household finances. 19 months of stable economic management has seen inflation decline, with the Bank of England delivering a series of rate cuts, bringing down the cost of monthly mortgage payments.

The Prime Minister needs to decide how he will go, The House Magazine, Monday 2nd FebruaryΒ 2026 Come the May elections, Keir Starmer will be gone. I suspect even in Number 10 there are few people who doubt this now. While the Mandelson Scandal will prove to be the final nail in his political coffin, I’m afraid that it is only a symptom of the real issue: poor political judgement. The public has seen this clearly in the form of regular u-turns and the constant ditching of policies first leaked to the press, while incoherent party management has alienated the Prime Minister’s natural supporters.

How to grow an economy, Crawley Observer Column, Wednesday 4th FebruaryΒ 2025 Listening to politicians, you would think the economy was everything. As the Chair of the Parliamentary Group for Wellbeing Economics, I’m well-aware the evidence proves relationships, meaningful work, and physical activity improve quality of life far more than material wealth. Yet, while this is useful to know to prioritise public expenditure and taking decisions for our own lives, the reality is you can’t do much without money.

Trump can forget, but we will always remember them, Crawley Observer Column, Wednesday 28th JanuaryΒ 2025 When you consider what makes up the UK’s national identity, what comes to mind? The Royal Family? Fish and chips? Our National Health Service. Expert queuing? Great answers, but for me nothing quite embodies our national character as much as Remembrance Sunday. The UK is far from alone in having a day dedicated to remembrance, but the day unites people across every part of our nation in taking the time to reflect upon the sacrifices made so those of us here today can live free from tyranny.

Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Statement – 27/01/26 Yesterday the Government announced changes which will transform the housing conditions of leaseholders, including capping ground rents and moving toward commonhold. However, with Forge Wood and a number of other roads in Crawley currently suffering from 'fleecehold' (having to pay large sums for services residents receive from the council elsewhere), I took the chance to press the minister for action as soon as the consultation on the topic ends.
