We’re all being asked to tolerate lots of discomfort to make a living 8+ hours a day, is it any wonder that in the rest of our time we choose the path of least resistance.

Which idk, I feel like that element isn’t discussed. The fact that it’s not so much that the thing being peddled is super pleasurable and mind hacking (the way it’s often characterized) I think it’s more that it doesn’t ask anything of you and that’s particularly appealing when we’re all exhausted.

Like I find myself often falling into the trap of sacrificing my longer term interests and pursuits for the shallow but immediate gratification of the algorithms - not because they’re terribly gratifying, but because they let me avoid the elements I want to avoid.

The thing about our internet ecosystem I’ve observed in how it affects myself - it’s not like it provides any great amount of pleasure. But also it is free from discomfort and difficulty. And like a lot of the time that quality is actually more appealing than things which may be more satisfying.

Trump is not only a poor person’s ideal of a rich person but even more so a weak person’s idea of a strong person. They’re all that way.
