Holy crap. The DOJ is arguing that the President can unilaterally deport anyone he wants without ANY statutory authority, just on his inherent authority as President over national security.

That is a terrifying claim to make and not one that has ever been recognized before in US history.

TJ's is actually our preferred egg shop. It's a 30 minute drive, and doesn't have the selection of closer grocery stores, but we do a ~monthly trip just for eggs, dried fruit, nuts, and sausages like we're visiting the general store in our covered wagon or something.

About $5 and a half bucks this week here at the Publix, worse at Food City, and better at Wal-Mart. That said, we are a "Jumbo" egg household when available, so some of that is a luxury egg mark-up.

May the odds be ever in your favor.

Seems unlikely to directly effective Twitter much, BUT it might encourage enough folks (e.g. NBA journalists) who haven't made the jump to BSky to do so.

Increasingly seeing good sized subreddits (at least r/NBA and r/lotr in the last few minutes) ban Twitter links. Feels like a big deal, particularly in light of Twitter downgrading posts with links.

Why housing shortages cause homelessness - Works in Progress Why do high-cost cities have more homelessness? It's not just about rents β€” it’s also about the rooms friends and family can’t afford to share.

A new piece by Salim Furth makes important points on the relationships between homelessness and housing supply, which is more complicated than some analyses suggest: worksinprogress.co/issue/why-ho...

The Court just denied cert in Sosa v. Martin County, leaving in place CA11's horrible en banc decision.

So cops in FL, GA, and AL are still free to jail people for up to 3 days w/o consequence if anyone else in the country with the same name as the arrestee has an outstanding warrant.

Maybe just anecdotal, but the people I know who first adopted R when it came out were self-teachers looking for ways to teach themselves stats. Opportunity cost of their time was pretty low otherwise, so something that involved a big learning curve wasn't really an impediment like Stata's cost was.

Think of it like a more narrow, but more successful Linux, which is still considered the gold standard OS for some situations, but absolutely positively terrible for 90% of the population compared to expensive Mac/Windows options.

R's strength has mostly been two-fold:

1. It's free, so the barrier to entry (either in learning or expanding it) is massively lower than Stata
2. It gained wide use among young people who had lots of free time, little cash, and comfort learning new tech

After that it's just network effects.

I try not to do much punditry on the Trump legal stories - there are a few reporters who are good on it, read them! But my interest in all this is the moral hazard of not punishing election interference. You don't want a status quo where the loser can try to overturn the election for months.

Unlikely, but I also learned to game in the NES/Sega era when proprietary game titles were the assumed default (e.g. Mario vs Sonic) and the market was perfectly fine. There are lots of reasons companies don't go this route, though, including the overlap between console/PC gaming.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that the FTC's case here was one of the weakest arguments I've ever seen from a federal regulator on a high profile issue. Not a terribly surprising decision.
