1. They cause selective mortality that erodes genetic diversity
2. Droughts fragment rivers and refuges can become ecological traps
3. Longβlasting physical legacies reshape habitats

Remembering my dear, radical mother Dinah on #internationalwomensday.
She took @fergus.oolong.co.uk & I to Greenham Common when we were tiny to support the women there, where my first memory of the police was watching them drag a peacefully-resisting woman across the road by her hair
Now think about an EV instead. The sun produces energy by fusing hydrogen atoms into helium. It travels 93 million miles in about eight minutes and 20 seconds (seven seconds more when our orbit takes us furthest away). Those photons then strike the silicon atoms in a photovoltaic panel, knocking loose electrons that produce a stream of direct current electricity; an inverter, now usually contained in the panel, converts that to AC power, which can be pumped directly into the battery of an EV where the motor uses electromagnetism to create a rotating magnetic field in a stator, which spins the inner rotor to propel the car. There are about 20 moving parts in the engine, and it is 80 to 90 percent efficient. There is no exhaust and almost no noise. Thatβs it. And if you poured those electrons into an e-bike instead of an EV, itβs even better: a pennyβs worth of power is good for three miles or so. The same principles apply to electric buses, electric ferries, and so on.

Public service announcement: this is a FOSSIL FUEL CRISIS
Not an 'energy crisis'. People need energy: it keeps them alive. This is a crisis due to forced dependency on the most unreliable and unstable fuel product in human history.
THIS IS A FOSSIL FUEL CRISIS.
Itβs already happening. Iran attacked a desalination plant in Bahrain.
This war has to end immediately. If it turns into a water war we will be dealing with a whole different level of a humanitarian catastrophe across the region.

Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads: The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same... - Marjane Satrapi, Iranian-French graphic novelist

Dense, dark forests in Europe are a modern phenomenon - Europeβs landscapes for 23 Myr were mostly tree- & flower-rich mosaics shaped by large herbivores, not dense #forests, see our new synthesis www.eurekalert.org/news-release... #forests #woodlands #paleoecology #nature #trees #refiorestation
Gas prices jumped again this morning and are on track to double - a stark reminder of our exposure to fossil fuel volatility.
The real solution isnβt more drilling, but moving away from combustion: electrify, use renewable power, and boost energy efficiency.

This nonsense of βallies ofβ spinning BS and getting it regurgitated by senior journalists really needs to end
Josh Simons resigned before a full independent investigation could examine how he paid PR to investigate journalists when running Labour Together
Thatβs the story
I hate to ask this, but Tehran is still on the cusp of running out of water and Iran is running very low on food. Whatever the regime was doing to help is obviously no longer happening, so are we just going to let 7M people die of thirst and 100M starve?
The US and Israel are bombing Iran. Anyone reporting it as βpreventiveβ is engaging in propaganda, by definition. There is no interpretation of whatβs happening as anything else than a crime.
You donβt have to like the Iranian regime to understand why this is bad.

Labour were right in saying that this was a two-horse race between them and Reform. They just forgot to mention that the Greens were way out in front, leaving them both for dust π

One of the worst things about AI, for me, is that it takes away from people the sheer joy of writing. Schools donβt often make this point, but writing should be fun. Putting words together, finding ways to express yourself, the pure pleasure of a well-crafted sentence. 1/5
