I caught the prisoner’s stare and chuckled, “You’ll break soon, they always do.” The visual contact struck me with something warm and pure, sparking the antithesis of my soul. My laughter died, and I pulled my stare away from him, heat creeping up my neck. The feeling disappeared as quickly as it came. But even after I’d shut my captee away in solitude, a muted tingle remained in my chest. One I couldn’t ignore, no matter how hard I tried.
