Gladys Shapiro (1911-2001) was one of the few independent female lawyers of her day and a staunch supporter of the West End. Gladys took action against urban renewal in the West End and Beacon Hill. Here, she led a group that successfully opposed the demolition of parts of the North Slope.

On May 4th, 1853 Sarah Parker Redmond (1824-1894) and two of her friends were kicked out of the Howard Athenaeum on account of their race. Redmond took this to court and was granted $500 in damages. This case brought attention to issues of segregation and discrimination in 19th-Century Boston.

This October, we posted a photo of the former site of the Winchell School with a photo of the original building in black and white held up against it.
Recently, the original entrance was restored and is viewable on Blossom Street! We suggest taking a stroll over there on this beautiful day.

We can't wait for warm weather like what people were enjoying at the Charlesbank Beach in 1940.
In 1936, a 300-foot-long swimming beach was constructed along the Charles River near the Longfellow Bridge in Boston. It closed in 1949 due to severe pollution.
