Liebe Kolleg:innen, wir freuen uns sehr, dass der 17. Workshop der Panelsurveys im deutschsprachigen Raum am 13. und 14. März 2025 in Wien stattfinden wird. Statistik Austria und das Austrian Socio-Economic Panel (ASEP) laden Euch dazu herzlich in die Räumlichkeiten der Statistik Austria ein. Wie jedes Jahr richtet sich diese Veranstaltung an Forscher:innen, die wissenschaftliche Panelstudien planen und durchführen. Im Rahmen des Workshops besteht die Möglichkeit, aktuelle Themen und Befunde der Umfrageforschung sowie erhebungspraktische Herausforderungen und Innovationen in Panelstudien zu diskutieren. Die präsentierten Themen sollen dabei explizit in einem Bezug zu der Erhebung von Panelstudien stehen. Dies können zum Beispiel folgende Themen sein: • Methodologische Experimente im Panelkontext • Best-Practices im Datenmanagement • Management von Änderungen des Designs und Fragebogens über die Wellen • Auswirkungen von Preloads/Dependent Interviewing auf Datenqualität und Respondent Burden • Messung und Verhindern von Satisficing • Design und Wirkung von Informed Consent • Auswirkungen monetärer und nicht-monetärer Pre-Incentives • Problemgruppen und Lösungsansätze bei Rekrutierung und Panelmortalität • Vor- und Nachteile von Mixed Mode Designs innerhalb von und zwischen Panelwellen • Innovative Ansätze der Panelpflege • Konzeption und Datenreleases neuer Panelstudien oder über diese Liste hinausgehen. Bitte sendet uns Eure Abstracts (maximal 250 Wörter) bis zum 07.01.2025 an Panelworkshop@statistik.gv.at. Summing up (thanks for bearing with me!): MEHM-data are widely available and using GSEM to combine them into a single, interval-scaled indicator of health is possible and results in a less biases health estimate than SRH. (10/11)
Anything above the red line(s) are significant 'biases'. We see that education and age biases were not significant for men using MEHM(+) but for SRH. Nominally, this is also true for women. Also generally for income and optimism. Great! (9/11)
That's great - but a little unidimensional. To dig a little deeper, I chose an approach I already used for a different paper: controlling as much health information as possible, then analyzing the residuals to identify biases:

Using DEAS-data of Germans aged 40-85 (by Deutsches Zentrum für Altersfragen), I wanted to combine the MEHM into 1 indicator. Cronbach's α was great across age groups (esp. for a short scale!).
Next step: combining them using generalized structural equation modeling (GSEM) - does it work? (5/11)
The Minimum European Health Module (MEHM) does exactly this: it consists of SRH, a question on chronic health conditions, and a question on health-related activity limitations. Importantly, as a Eurostat measure, it's widely available!
