Perks of living in Kiel
Perks of living in Kiel
Lots of geophysical devices and instruments are displayed at the geosciences booth. Radar, thermography, seismology and many more
There were so many interested children and adults eager to learn something about seismology.
Yet another Kieler Woche came and went. And this time I introduced many guests - from three year olds to very many year olds - to the world of seismology. So glad, I could be part of a diverse presentation by Kiel University at the Kiellinie - the heart of the Kieler Woche fair.
It remembered me of the climate debates at EGU in the past where it was always about โspeaking upโ, talking to (low level) politicians and so forthโฆ while the other side is fighting with a whole different kind of arsenal. I understand, we have to do something, but itโs just a drop in a bucket?
Why are #EGU25 great debates almost never debates but panelists agreeing with each other almost all the time?
My poster at EGU 2025 titled โactive and passive slabs in the Mediterraneanโ
Poster sessions at #EGU25 are set for 90 minutes. But the stream of people coming to my poster just didnโt stop, so I talked for 4:30 hoursโฆ
But the discussions came out to be very inspiring!

The GFZ Potsdam building hosting the seismology section
Went to GFZ Potsdam for a small workshop expecting to talk about some works in the Eifel in front of seismologists. Had to improvise when I found out that also quite a few rock chemists, volcanologists and other non-seismologists were present. Hope I didnโt bore them too much ๐ซ
An image of the island of San Servolo
Our 6th AdriaArray workshop on the island of San Servolo in the Laguna of Venice came to a close.
Besides lots of actually interesting talks, a poster session and practical workshops we also had a fun Early Career Researcher Event where I met new awesome people!
The gardens of San Servolo. Itโs an old monastery and really green.
The island is very small. The walls of the houses are at the same time the shore line of the island.
Very famous: the piazza San Marco in Venice. Such a impressive city!
This is the lovely island of San Servolo in the Laguna of Venice. Here we currently hold the AdriaArray workshop. Today we started with some overview talks and poster presentations. I enjoy it so much!
Really looking forward to the next Great Debate at #EGU25 where weโre again going to hear that we just โhave to talk about climate changeโ and โkeep spreading awarenessโ while the other side is fighting with these massive bazookas.
Let the fun begin

Pumkin spiced latte just a few hours before going into the holidays!
On the very last day of the promotion I managed to fill up my bonus card and got a free pumpkin spiced latte at the cafeteria.
Thanks StudentenwerkSH!
View of the cliffs at the coastline of the Kiel Bay. The beach is full of rocks that were transported there during the ice ages.
Close up of the rocks at the beach. One large rock (ca. 1 m diameter) has been identified as a Gneiss. It displays folds and an intrusion and is of reddish color.
We had a small excursion with a few students to the coastline just outside of Kiel where we found lotโs of different rocks.
Though the sky was pretty grey it was a lovely field trip!
