Second paper of the week, this time in Biological Conservation, shows that global differences in nature connectedness are not primarily a product of economic or environmental conditions, rather cultural and spiritual values. Blog and full paper: findingnature.org.uk/2026/02/26/g...
At this stage, Avian Flu hasnβt been ruled out. If you see a dead seabird, please donβt touch it or move it. β οΈ
Report it to Defra (or Daera in NI) and log it on BirdTrack via the BTO website.

Every report helps build a picture.
An Atlantic Puffin stands on a narrow, rocky cliff ledge streaked with lichen and tufts of grass. Its black back and white chest contrast with the pale stone, and its bright orange bill catches the light. The blurred backdrop of steep coastal rock faces hints at a rugged seabird colony, one of the special coastal habitats that provide vital nesting sites for wildlife.
Which is why the habitats they fight to return to must be protected.
Weakening protections for key sites for nature would push our already struggling wildlife closer to collapse.
Yet the UK Government is considering doing just that.

Visiting Wensleydale later this year... can't wait π
Bishopthorpe Parish Council want to sell a small wildlife oasis hosting rare wildflowers like Yellow Star-of-Bethlehem to a developer. This field belongs to the people of Bish who cherish its wildlife. Please sign this petition to stop them doing this. Thanks π c.org/syGKBRcGBY

Fantastic Starling murmuration today at YWT Ripon Wetlands. At 1542 a Sparrowhawk dived into the flock, appearing again on the outer curve. A huge curling shape, thousands of small birds acting as one enormous organism. So impressive to witness. @birdingdad.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Plant taxonomy is disappearing - and so is our ability to protect species π
Nearly half of countries have fewer than 10 plant taxonomists. Kew is working to close the gap, but we need more experts fast.

Although we're not where we should be, we're on a significantly better trajectory than we were 10 years ago.
A Robin perches upright on a branch, chest puffed out and beak open mid-song. Its stance and expression convey urgency: a symbol of natureβs voice calling out as the future of Englandβs planning system hangs in the balance.
Today, the Planning Bill returns to the Lords. And the future of nature in Englandβs planning system is on the line. π³β οΈ
