I agree. And it’s shameful how complicit the Environment Agency was - it turned a wilfully blind eye to it all.

Yes Bill, my Penguin Collected says it was translated by Richard Lourie. I should have acknowledged that. The Notes add ‘One Stanza was placed on the monument in Gdańsk erected by Solidarity in 1980 to commemorate the workers killed by the police in 1970.’ Great poems never achieve irrelevance.
