This is interesting. I discovered Willβs work when I was working on my own book about Britain and tried to educate myself about Wales.

'Never has the connective tissue between rhetoric and reality been drawn so thin. In those 45 seconds [of Hegseth's chest-beating video], you can see the surface of American public life peeling away from reality itself.'
Well quite.

I hate to puncture the wishful bubble but unless these moves in markets get _a_lot_ worse, I donβt think the White House will find anything much to worry about, much less worth a TACO.
The main pain - so far - is being felt in non-US markets.
That might all change, of course, but not yetβ¦.
Absolutely

My photo shows a famous wall painting from Pompeii known as the Sappho fresco. It shows the head and upper body of a young woman framed inside a painted circular border. She faces forward. Her eyes are large and dark, gazing to one side with a calm and thoughtful expression, as if pausing mid-thought. Her skin is pale, and her hair is dark brown and tightly curled, forming small ringlets around her face. A thin golden hairnet holds her curls in place. She wears small gold hoop earrings, and a brown cloak over a green garment. In her right hand she holds a thin dark metal stylus (writing tool) up against her lips, as if thinking about what to write. In her left hand she holds a small rectangular wooden wax writing tablet. The fresco is now on display at the Muso Archeologico Nazionale in Naples

Back to the beginning...thrilled to be returning to the city where I learned to love history to talk, well history - more particularly, about Britain and Ireland, past and future. @faberbooks.bsky.social

Heating oil prices have more than doubled in the UK since war broke out: thatβs 4.5m people living off gas grid, no they havenβt all got Agas, and in places like Cumbria and Scottish islands thatβs a lot of anxious pensioners. (Difference with post-Ukraine is oil as well as gas spiking this time)

Savour the irony here. For a year the Trump administration have browbeaten Zelensky as a loser with no cards. Now they turn to him for anti-drone defences. Perhaps they will now recognise that Ukraine is a valuable, battle-hardened ally.
This time including my Christian name. I feel unfairly maligned.
I thought it would be fun to type in my own name.
(Seems harsh, really.)
Local residents in Kuwait approach one of the F-15 pilots, thanking him for his service during the defense against Iranian attacks, after he ejected following a friendly fire incident that resulted in three U.S. F-15 fighter jets being shot down.
I find predictions impossible at this point.

"The German government is preparing to repatriate children, the sick, and pregnant women among the Germans stranded in the Middle East. Airlines will be sending planes to Riyadh and Muscat for this purpose, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) said in Berlin." @dpa.com
really noticeable tendency of MPs struggling to think about foreign policy other than as mise-en-scene for their own domestic/partisan beef. Over in the Kemiverse, a US war on Iran is best understood through the internal dynamics of Labour's electoral coalition?
Finally, it is possible to be extremely concerned about the current US trajectory without romanticizing a violent and dangerous
theocracy.
