We have a curious system in this country whereby working class people can “work hard” and still not afford to feed their family and wealthy people can “work hard” in order to accumulate vast amounts of money and ‘create jobs’ but still not afford to pay tax for fear of…. erm… abject poverty?

Reminiscent of painting planes in ‘UK livery’ during a COVID crisis at enormous cost. For what? I support re nationalisation of our service and utilities, not performative politics that changes little.
While, I totally agree, this will sadly never happen. Even if it did, the man/men at the heart of the chaotic gov of the time, wouldn’t know truth or oaths if they met them in their soup! You know they are lying because they are communicating, in any format.
We should stop the boats because it's dangerous, and we should stop the scapegoating of immigrants because it's wrong and cruel.

While I agree with you in principle, we are in the era of Cult politics. Trump and Farage have £, media support and communication skills that despite their message, breakthrough to the hard of thinking. Hatred of ‘others’ is elevated by poverty and disengagement, and that feeds their popularity.
Heard that before! It worked so well for us in the Johnson era! I was sceptical of the brain worm theory, but it’s clearly in charge.

I remember the various political sleeze fests going back decades, where mostlyTory politicians hit the headlines every day for nefarious activities. These rats are leaving sinking small boats at an interesting rate. Time it hit headlines and their supporters saw depth of corruption and incompetence.

Seems like a false premise. While inequality and poverty do breed division, fuelled by biased media. This growth will channel yet more money to the rich. Strip assets from working people into the pockets of the 1%. Very limited change to inequality or poverty, so no relief from division.

If it were confined to social media that would be bad enough but it is increasingly seeping into my life. Even in my sleepy little Scottish town. Most politicians pushing right and following msm and social media down this rt wing path has to stop. Empathy, compassion and humanity matter.
Excellent substack. The way more and more rt wing press use, “writing designed to stoke those feelings, to hit her readers’ mental triggers for fear and anxiety” is disgusting.

This is so true. Apathy to human suffering and the absence of empathy and compassion are the things that threaten the values I hold. In Gaza certainly but increasingly across the world and it is growing here in UK.
I am at a loss over the hatred of migrants. Friday I was driving a woman who was married to a refugee and has two children with him to a hosp apt. She was celebrating the protests and making the rt wing trope allegations and assertions. Media coverage is driving this. We must do better.
